Patience, perseverance, and forbearance

The state of the mind is very much being determined by the degrees of patience, perseverance and forbearance, as well as adaptability and accommodation (the mental stamina, strength, and flexibility).

Under a higher degrees of patience, perseverance and forbearance, the mind is not easily be disturbed/frustrated/irritated/annoyed by the inevitable process of waiting for getting, achieving, or experiencing something that the mind likes and desires, as well as the process of dealing with something that the mind dislikes, disagrees with, and doesn't desire.

The mind that is highly impatient, lack of perseverance, and reluctant to forbear even the slightest physical or mental discomfort, is easily be disturbed/frustrated/irritated/annoyed by the inevitable process of waiting for getting, achieving, or experiencing something that the mind likes and desires, as well as the process of dealing with something that the mind dislikes, disagrees with, and doesn't desire.

It doesn't mean that the minds that are more or less patient, persevere, or forbearing than some other minds are better or worst human beings than the others. It's merely about the state of mind of the minds that are still functioning under the veil of ignorance and egoism, is very much being determined and influenced by the degrees of patience, perseverance, and forbearance, where the state of mind is also affecting their everyday life affair, behavior, action, reaction, decision making, physical and mental performance, interaction and relationship with others.

The mind that is lack of patience, perseverance, or forbearance could be having strong awareness and self-control of not wanting to generate any hurtful action or reaction that would hurt oneself and others under the disturbed state of mind due to the lack of patience, perseverance, or forbearance, and vice versa.

Patience, perseverance, and forbearance are something limited and conditional.

They are limited, because one can be patient, be persevered, and be forbearing, up to a certain extend, where fatigue or burnout will kick in, just like there is particular limitation in the physical stamina, strength, and flexibility.

They are conditional, because just as the physical stamina, strength, and flexibility, the degrees of patience, perseverance, and forbearance can be developed and empowered, where the limitation can be extended up to another extend, or they can be declining as well.

Both physical and mental stamina, strength, and flexibility, are limited and conditional. They are not the goal of the yoga practice.

The means of the yoga practice is about developing correct understanding, or realizing the truth of selflessness and impermanence, by eradicating the veil of ignorance, the idea of 'I', egoism, impurities, and restlessness from the selfless impermanent modification of the mind.

The one that needs to be patient, be persevered, and be forbearing towards this or that, that is less or more disturbed by this or that, is the ego, or the idea of 'I' in the mind.

Under the presence of correct understanding, or under the absence of ignorance, the idea of 'I', egoism, impurities, and restlessness, the selfless liberated mind doesn't even need to be patient, be persevered, or be forbearing towards anything.

Under the absence of the idea of 'I and egoism of attachment, identification, desire of craving and aversion, comparison, judgment, and expectation, the selfless perceptive cognitive intellectual emotional thinking and acting mind is not being determined or disturbed by the presence and absence of all kinds of names and forms that appeared to be pleasant or unpleasant, agreeable or disagreeable, desirable or undesirable, enjoyable or non-enjoyable, as well as what the worldly passionate egoistic minds think, believe, judge and categorize as good or bad, right or wrong, appropriate or inappropriate, auspicious or inauspicious, positive or negative, joyful or sorrowful, meaningful or meaningless, selfishness or unselfishness, deserving or undeserving, strength or weakness, success or failure, achievement or non-achievement, contribution or non-contribution, and so on, based on the many worldly passionate egoistic ways of thinking, beliefs, ideas, values, desires, aspirations, actions, reactions, and practices.

The mind that knows what is non-attachment towards the actions/duties/responsibilities/practice/ties and relationships and the fruit or the outcome of all that, or the mind that is dispassionate, desireless and intentionless, is a liberated mind.

Before the mind is free, the practice and the development and empowerment of patience, perseverance, and forbearance is highly useful and important. As Swami Sivananda taught, "Forbearance is the highest sadhana."

Be free.

Inquire the truth of everything.

Want to practice yoga? (3)

The basics of yoga practice :-

1.) Leave our personal thinking and beliefs only to ourselves. Put away all the conditioned personal thinking and beliefs when dealing with other people in the world and learn to be open-minded and respect all others for being different from us, or having different thinking and beliefs from ours.

2.) If we are fussy people about something or many things, throw these fussiness away whether instantly or gradually.

3.) If we are highly sensitive towards certain sights, sounds, smells, tastes, sensations or thoughts, then try to practice tolerance and forbearance towards all the names and forms that will annoy or irritate us or our minds. Certain physical allergic reactions are biological, where we need to avoid coming in contact with certain things that we are allergic to, or there might be some drugs or medicine that can counter those allergic reactions, but quite many physical reactions are a form of manifestation deriving from the corrupted or ill-thinking minds. Clean out all the rubbish in our minds can eliminate many types of sensitivities/allergies where drugs or medicines also can't cure.

We may or may not know that ourselves are being difficult occasionally or frequently. We learn to recognize them and throw those difficult habits and behaviors away, and stopped being a difficult person for ourselves and others. We learn to be aware of ourselves for being difficult, and we might intentionally or unintentionally generate inconveniences and difficulties to other people who come in contact with us directly or indirectly. Without judgment or expectation, we do our best to change ourselves to be less difficult.

We also learn how to deal with other people who are having difficult personality and behavior that might intentionally or unintentionally generate inconveniences and difficulties to other people who come in contact with them directly or indirectly, with compassion. These difficult people are suffering from their own difficulties as well. We learn how to tolerate all the difficult people and difficult situations, without judgment or expectation, without being disturbed or determined by all these difficult experiences, without losing our patience and tolerance, and learn how to adjust ourselves to accommodate the difficult people and situations, while remain equanimous and be at peace.

May all be happy practicing yoga.

Patience

Impatience is the 'obstacle' itself as well as it generates other unnecessary 'difficulties' and 'obstacles' in what we are doing. If there is patience, there is no difficulty nor obstacle.

Be happy.

Be humble, be patient, be grateful and be forgiving, if we want to see improvement in our life...

Be humble, be patient, be grateful (content) and be forgiving, and you will see your life moving towards brightness and happiness...

Be arrogant, be impatient, be ungrateful (discontent or greedy) and be hating, and you will see your life moving towards darkness and unhappiness...

If we practice humility, patience, gratefulness and forgiveness, we will see the condition of our life gradually improve and will have "less" problems and obstacles... Not that by being humble, patient, grateful, or forgiving will give us the superpower to change everything to be the way that we desire, like and agree with, or to make all the bad things disappear, but it's because our mind is opening up.

The truth is, problems and obstacles will always still be there, but it is our mind perception of things has changed... Being humble, patient, grateful and forgiving, or not, doesn't change the truth of things being what it is - Selfless and Impermanent. Things will still be happening as it is, if there's a cause ripening for it to be happening. Things that were usually being perceived as "problems" and "obstacles" are no more being perceived as problems and obstacles now, they are just some impermanent names and forms arising and passing away, forming and disintegrating. We don't see them as problems and obstacles anymore and not rejecting them, but allowing them to be exist just like we allow "good" and "happy" things to be exist, sharing this space of the universe...

We have problems, tensions, fear, worry and unhappiness, it's because we try to retain the "good" and "happy" things (which are impermanent and subject to changes), and try to push away the "bad" and "unhappy" things (which are impermanent and subject to changes as well)...

Contemplate on this and free ourselves from being conditioned by our own mind perception that we only want to have "good and happy" things and don't want to have "bad and unhappy" things.

It is up to the mind whether things are "good and happy" or things are "bad and unhappy". The things themselves are just being what they are, they are not something "good and happy" nor something "bad and unhappy". They have no quality nor intention to be good or bad, to make us happy or unhappy...

A positive mind perceives everything as something positive...

A negative mind perceives everything as something negative...

A mind that has gone beyond positive and negative, perceives everything as it is, it is not something positive nor negative...

Be happy.

Try changing the habits of the mind by learning another foreign language or adopting new interests...

For those who are being troubled and influenced strongly by negative emotions and feelings (such like anger, jealousy, depression, anxiety, fear, worry, low self-esteem and etc...), and don't know how to come out from it because we don't know how to stay detached from all these activities in the mind, then we may try to change this stubborn habit of attachment in the mind towards these negative feelings and emotions by learning and speaking another language that we are not familiar with, or adopting new interests...

It will shift something in the brain and without any expectation, we might find ourselves suddenly or gradually becoming more positive and cheerful...

If we are not interested in learning languages, then we can try to learn something new and interesting that we are not familiar with (of course these new interests should be something that will bring positive effects and peaceful harmony to our body and mind)...

Or gradually break a long term stubborn habit of our behavior (such like switch on the TV as soon as we step into the house, or open the door of the fridge even though we know there is nothing that we want from the fridge, or looking at the watch frequently, or have the need of a cup of coffee at specific time, and etc)...

Or try to perform some selfless service (to ourselves and other beings without discrimination and attachment) without asking any rewards in return. Just give and let go...

It will still give the same effect of changing the habits of the mind. Of course it takes time, patience and perseverance to see any result (without expectation).

Give it a try, if we are tired of negative feelings and emotions that persistently troubling us, and we really want to make a change of ourselves, want to be kind and compassionate towards ourselves, and want to live to the fullest, be more positive and cheerful...

Be happy.

Patience, Perseverance & Cheerfulness - Basic Yoga Practice

Most of us will either be angry with ourselves or with "God" when we encounter difficult situations in life or encounter sickness and injury in the physical body... There is nothing wrong with being angry when things turn out not the way that we want it to be... It is very normal to feel frustrated.

We will blame ourselves or criticize ourselves for being weak and helpless or being unfortunate or being sinful, and give ourselves all these reasons how come our life is in bad condition, and why our body is sick and is in painful suffering...

Or we will be angry with someone else, trying to blame somebody for the cause of the difficult moments in our life...

The point is, being optimistic, patient, persevere and cheerful, undisturbed or unaffected by all conditions, are the basic practice of yoga. If we are full of negative thinking, being impatient and depressed most of the time, easily giving up and being disturbed and affected by all the conditions, then what is the point of all our "yoga practice" that contains asana, pranayama and meditation?

We don't have to judge or criticize ourselves or anybody for whatever is happening to us in our life. It's because by doing so, it won't change the fact of the reality that we have been through and are going through. But it will create more negative energy into our system and into the surrounding people and environment that are connected with us in our life existence. This won't help to solve any problems nor make our problems disappear.

If we want to realize yoga, we need to have great patience, perseverance and cheerfulness to go beyond or to transcend all kinds of physical and mental agony and other obstacles or difficulties in life.

Having a weak or sick physical body cannot stop a person who is endowed with patience, perseverance and cheerfulness from being happy nor can it stop a person from attaining yoga in them.

But if we have no patience, perseverance or cheerfulness, then it will be very difficult for us to go beyond all the attachments, clingings, egoism, craving and aversion that are constantly happening in our mind. And hence, it is difficult for us to be cheerful when things went wrong, or it's difficult to attain yoga even though our physical body is very strong and healthy and is performing all kinds of yoga practices for a long time, but without the real enforcement of the yoga philosophy about non-attachment, non-identification, non-reaction, non-dualism, namelessness and formlessness...

People like to ask about how long we have been practicing yoga. This is a common question that people like to ask, either the teacher will ask the students, or the students will ask the teacher.

The truth is, whether we will realize yoga or not, it has got nothing to do with how long we have been "practicing" yoga. Time and duration is really not the factor that will determine how much we understand about yoga or what level of consciouness that we have attained.

A person can be practicing "yoga" for many years but is still attached strongly to the body and the mind, and the mind might still be full of impurities, attachments, clingings, egoism, craving and aversion, and is unhappy and unpeaceful, being disturbed and affected by the condition of the world, the life, the body and the mind. This person may call himself a "yogi" but is not really a yogi at all.

A person can be never practice any "yoga", didn't know anything about yoga practice, but still can be free from impurities, attachments, clingings, egoism, craving and aversion, and is happy and peaceful, not being disturbed or affected by the condition of the world, the life, the body and the mind. This person is truly a yogi...

Yoga is here at this very moment if we can let go of any attachment without craving and aversion at this instant moment...

Be prepared to let go of the selfish ego and be very open minded to receive the knowledge that will lead us to our inner peace, love, compassion and wisdom...

"A person may know how to be happy and is full of love, but he cannot make others happy nor can he gives anyone love"... If this can be done, then in truth, this world should have no unhappiness and hatred at all, but why are there so many people are not happy and full of hatred?

If a person says to somebody, "I want to make you very happy and I will give you lots of love", but this doesn't mean that the other person will be happy and will have lots of love, and is free from unhappiness and hatred... That's why lots of love relationship didn't work out very well.

True love and true happiness is coming from within ourselves... Love and happiness that come from the outside condition springs from craving and clinging for things that the mind likes and wants, and is subject to changes and impermanence...

Everyone must realize this love and happiness that is within ourselves by our own self...

May all realize this and be free from all conditions.
