Whether other minds are being understanding towards what is going on in one's mind, or not, it's not important. Most important, is that this mind understands towards what is going on in itself.
Once the mind understands what is happening in itself, it doesn't need any other minds to understand or being sympathetic/empathetic towards what is happening in itself, and it won't be disappointed or frustrated if other minds don't or couldn't understand what is happening in itself, because most minds don't really know what is going on in themselves, not to say, to understand what is going on in other minds.
The minds that know Thyself, or knowing what is going on in itself, a.k.a. void of ignorance, knowing that all these are selfless and impermanent, they are mentally and emotionally independent, resting in unconditional peace and contentment, void of the idea of 'I' and egoism, void of the sense of self-esteem, self-worth, pride, selfishness,
possessiveness, greed, offensiveness, defensiveness, hostility, animosity, dissatisfaction,
disappointment, hurt, fear, worry, guilt, regret, loneliness, negativeness, meaninglessness, craving, aversion, and all kinds of duality, void of the longing towards receiving love, attention, mental and emotional support, agreement, acknowledgement, appreciation, recognition, approval, praise, compliment, encouragement, understanding, sympathy, empathy, console, interactions, companionship, pleasurable enjoyment, blessing, 'access to heaven', and etc, from anyone or anywhere, not even from the personalized 'God', or 'gods', or 'spiritual entities', that many minds want and need to believe in, hang onto, and rely on.
No matter how suffering or ignorant is the mind, due to all and everything is limited and conditional, selfless and impermanent, but then, it's also because of all and everything is limited, conditional, selfless and impermanent, where all and everything is subject to changes governed by cause and effect, that there's possibility of evolution or transformation that leads towards the liberation from all that, if there's a strong enough will to be navigating the impermanent changes towards certain direction.
The very simple key word to liberation is - Non-grasping, or Non-attachment. In this present moment NOW, there is suffering arise under the presence of grasping or attachment. In this present moment NOW, there is absence of suffering under the absence of grasping or attachment.
Under the presence of certain degrees of non-grasping or non-attachment, even if the mind haven't attained the complete annihilation of the restless selfless modification of the selfless mind, that is already a great liberation. However, the mind needs to be vigilant towards the power of ignorance, where the mind might be unwittingly getting lost again, and repeatedly.
The presence of grasping or attachment initiated all other kinds of defilement to be arising and occupying the selfless modification of the selfless mind, forming the thick layer of the veil of ignorance, egoism, impurities and seemingly endless restlessness. But fear not, as all these can be reversed. They all are limited, conditional, selfless and impermanent, although they are similar to the selfless natural disasters that carry the selfless random power of destruction towards anyone and anything. That's why the annihilation of all that is highly important to minimize unnecessary damaging effects in the world while being existing here momentarily.
Under the veil of ignorance and egoism, many minds that have the will to be free from all that, are struggling with non-grasping or non-attachment. Either they don't know what it is, or they think they know what it is but not really, or they know what it is intellectually, but it's extremely difficult for them to be practically non-grasping or non-attaching. That's why there are many different practices and approaches existing to enable the minds to eventually be able to be non-grasping or non-attaching towards the selfless mind perception of selfless names and forms, of all these that the selfless mind is experiencing, or what is going on in the selfless modification of the selfless mind.
When the mind is struggling with the practice of non-grasping or non-attachment, then the practice of non-identification, non-association, non-craving, non-aversion, non-comparison, non-judgment and non-expectation come into practice, to help the struggling mind to get through those struggles.
Even this 'struggle' in this present moment, is selfless and impermanent. This will also pass away. By having such understanding, all practice will become more and more effortless, until the practice is no longer needed, upon the annihilation of ignorance and egoism.
There is this basic instinct of the selfless will power in all minds, but not to be mistaken as the idea of 'I'. Regardless of how weak or strong is the intensity of that selfless will power, it gives rise to certain degrees of free will towards the thinking, action and speech, a.k.a. self-control, self-discipline, self-independence, determination, perseverance, forbearance, adjustment, adaptation, accommodation and patience. This selfless will power is always there, even under the absence of the idea of 'I'.
That certain degrees of free will or self-control over the thinking, action and speech, is what enabling all kinds of practices for self-evolution or self-transformation, mind purification, self-discipline, self-inquiry and self-realization to be happening.
Similarly, the selfless survival instinct in all and everyone, is always there, regardless of the presence or absence of the idea of 'I'. The difference is that, survival instinct under the presence of the idea of 'I', that gives rise to selfishness, fear, selfish desire, dissatisfaction, discontentment, greed, possessiveness, defensiveness, protectiveness, hostility, attachment, identification, craving, aversion, self-esteem, self-worth and pride, and etc, can give rise to many unnecessary damages to all and everything, either wittingly or unwittingly. While survival instinct under the absence of the idea of 'I', is just what it is, merely to maintain the selfless impermanent existence and function of the limited and conditional names and forms, regardless of sentient or non-sentient, just like in all kinds of selfless plants, there is the basic selfless survival instinct, or selfless will power, or selfless resilience, to keep existing selflessly, until ceased existing.
The selfless will power is neither good nor bad, however, depending on the states of the mind, or the presence and absence of ignorance, egoism and impurities, where the selfless will power can be powering the selfless mind to be constructive, or to be destructive.
The selfless mind under certain degrees of will power, can develop the practice of non-identification, detachment, non-attachment, non-judgment, non-comparison, non-craving, non-aversion, and non-expectation towards what is happening in itself, or towards the selfless existence and function of the selfless modification of the mind.
Even when the existence and function of the mind is selfless and impermanent, where there's no 'I' existing independently and permanently, depending on the supportive selfless elements and selfless energy to be existing and functioning, but that limited and conditional will power that is different intensity in different minds, can be developed to become stronger or more intense, unless there's some inevitable dysfunction, damage or injury in the brains, or the hardware of the selfless existence and function of the selfless thinking faculty.
Because of that selfless will power, the selfless mind has certain degrees of self-awareness and free will or self-control to be influencing the states of the mind to be in certain way, transcending the influence of the different energy fields (The three Gunas), or positiveness and negativeness, to develop certain qualities that influencing the personality, character, understanding and behavior, to think in certain way, to perform certain action and inaction under that free-will or selfless will power.
This will power is limited and conditional because it is selfless and impermanent, and hence, it can be developed, increased or decreased, where the mind can choose what kind of action and inaction that will give rise to respective consequences of action and inaction, and it can choose how to react towards everything, under certain degrees of will power.
No matter how strong is the will power, it doesn't, and cannot change the truth of selflessness and impermanence in all and everything governed by the nature's law of cause and effect. It cannot make the nature's law of cause and effect change into something else, or disappear, however, it can help and initiate the selfless mind that is under the influence of ignorance, egoism, impurities and restlessness, that perceives certain suffering deriving from ignorance and egoism, to be performing certain practice, to be eradicating ignorance, egoism, impurities and restlessness, to attain self-realization, and transcending all kinds of selfless impermanent existence and changes governed by the nature's law of cause and effect, transcending all kinds of actions and consequences of actions.
Similarly, the existence and function of the perceptive cognitive intellectual thinking mind, is selfless and impermanent, depending on the supportive elements and energy to be existing and functioning. There is no 'I' existing individually, independently, or permanently, to be in control of its existence and function. If there's no supportive elements and energy, this mind cannot exist or function by itself, alone.
Regardless of what is happening in the mind, or what is the state of the mind, regardless of something good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant, disturbing or soothing, happy or unhappy, positive or negative, enjoyable or painful suffering, pleasing or annoying, meaningful or meaningless, all are selfless and impermanent. They all are selfless and impermanent, because they come, stay for a while, change and go as they are. They don't ask for permission from the mind to be arising in the mind, to stay for a while, to be changing and passing away, governed by cause and effect. Similarly, all kinds of pleasant and unpleasant physical sensations, or thoughts, feelings and emotions, they are arising, changing, and passing away, as the effect of certain cause, as they are.
There is no 'I' existing to be in control of all kinds of names and forms being what they are, being selfless and impermanent, arising, changing, and passing away influenced by cause and effect, that the mind perceives either towards what is constantly arising, changing and passing away within the physical body and the modification of the mind, or towards what is constantly arising, changing and passing away outside the physical body, or in the surrounding environment, of what the mind coming in contact with, of what it sees, hears, smells, tastes, touches, senses, feels, and thinks, where all these are being reflected in the selfless modification of the mind.
One can be having the selfless will power to be initiated to create something out of certain selfless elements, but the selfless impermanent nature of that thing as well as everything, is not in the control of the selfless performer of actions and the selfless elements that give rise to that thing, or the manifestation of everything that depend on many selfless elements to be what they are. While the performer of actions that creates that thing itself, is also selfless and impermanent. Without all the selfless elements, the selfless performer of actions cannot create anything that depends on the selfless elements for it to become what it is.
That is why the existence of all kinds of names and forms that comes under certain qualities, that has a beginning and an end, that has an existence which followed by ceased existence, that comes under birth which followed by decay and death, that is limited and conditional, that is subject to impermanent changes, that is existing under the selfless generosity of the selfless supportive elements, are all selfless and impermanent.
All the names and forms that the mind perceives through the senses, of what the mind thinks and believes is the cause of all the different states of mind, are just being what they are, they are neither something good nor bad, neither disturbing nor soothing, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, neither happy nor unhappy, neither positive nor negative, neither enjoyable nor painful suffering, neither pleasing nor annoying, neither meaningful nor meaningless. They don't have the quality or intention to be this or that, unless the mind gives them the power and recognition to be this or that.
How or what the mind think and feel towards everything, whether the mind feels happy or unhappy towards this or that, and is being undisturbed or disturbed by this or that, is being determined by how the mind reacts towards everything that it comes in contact with. Under certain degrees of will power and correct understanding, the mind can choose how it wants to react towards everything.
Even if the speech coming from some minds with the intention to be hurtful and disturbing, but the speech itself has no quality or intention to be something hurtful or disturbing. It's the minds that give such power and recognition to that speech to be something disturbing and hurtful to themselves. Certain speech might be disturbing and hurting the minds that don't understand this, but the same speech doesn't, and cannot, disturb or hurt the minds that understand this.
Even if the damaging behavior or action coming from some minds with the intention to be damaging, and certain things are being physically damaged by that behavior or action, still, that behavior or that action itself has no quality or intention to be something disturbing and hurtful to the mind, unless the mind gives such power and recognition to such behavior or action as something disturbing and hurtful. The damaging effect cannot be undone, and it might or might not be able to be repaired physically, but the mind can have the will power and understanding not to give power or recognition to such destructive happening or experience as something disturbing and hurtful to the mind.
Being aware of, and acknowledging towards something unpleasant, disagreeable and undesirable is happening, or had happened, and it couldn't be avoided, while one can do one's best to do something to see if the damage can be repaired, or not. And it's okay, if that cannot be repaired. But, more importantly, the mind can be free from disturb or suffering, not being determined by all that, which are arising from ignorance, egoism, impurities and restlessness, and all are limited, conditional, selfless and impermanent, both the perceiver and the perceived or the objects of perception.
Similarly, being indifference or dispassionate, non-clinging and non-craving towards all kinds of pleasant, agreeable and desirable names and forms, ties and connections, relationships, interactions, conditions, situations, experiences or happenings. Merely selfless appreciation towards all kinds of pleasant, agreeable and desirable names and forms, being there as they are, and they all are selfless and impermanent. They all will change and pass away. Allowing them to change and pass away, as they are.
There's no suffering upon the impermanent changes and passing away of all those pleasant, agreeable and desirable names and forms. There's no greed or ambition to create more and more or endless names and forms that are pleasant, agreeable, desirable, enjoyable or soothing to the mind, or to stop all these names and forms from changing into something else, and passing away.
That is non-grasping or non-attachment.
That is freedom. Real freedom.
Suffering arise upon the presence of grasping or attachment towards all that, where there's craving and clinging towards names and forms that are pleasant, agreeable, desirable or enjoyable to the mind, where there is possessiveness, discontentment, greed and control towards all that, which are pleasant, agreeable, desirable, enjoyable or soothing to the mind, and there is aversion towards names and forms that are unpleasant, disagreeable, undesirable, non-enjoyable or painful to the mind, where there is anger, hatred, violence, interference and control towards all that, which are unpleasant, disagreeable, undesirable, non-enjoyable or painful to the mind.
That is grasping or attachment. For the minds that are suffering from clinical depression, which is a form of dysfunction or malfunction in the brains, that is nothing to do with whether everything that the selfless mind perceives in the selfless life existence are good or not good, easy or difficult, pleasant or unpleasant, agreeable or disagreeable and desirable or undesirable, which is also limited, conditional, selfless and impermanent, as it can be less intense or more intense in different timing, and regardless of whether it can be treated under certain medical treatment in some cases, or not, in certain cases, the mind can be aware of and acknowledging the state of depression, without grasping or attachment, without judgment or expectation, without identification or association with the selfless depressed state of mind. Under the presence of depression in the selfless modification of the mind, the mind can also be free from struggling or drowning in suffering, under the presence of correct understanding and certain degrees of free will or self-control, if there's a will.
And it's okay, if the mind couldn't go beyond all that.
That understanding of "It's okay that this mind cannot go beyond all that, and it's very suffering physically, mentally or emotionally, and all these are impermanent," is indeed a great liberation, transcending all kinds of selfless impermanent names and forms.
Even the most intense suffering or the deepest ignorance, is also limited, conditional, selfless and impermanent.
Under the veil of ignorance, the prideful ignorant egoistic minds 'create' lots of ideas, stories, beliefs or justifications to be justifying their ignorance towards themselves and everything, or what they don't know and don't understand, or what is unknown to them, or all the confusion and doubt in themselves, as well as to 'shut up' and 'hinder' others from questioning towards the truth of everything that they themselves are ignorant about, to implant fear in others, to be in control of others to be and not to be in certain way, that support their selfish desire and aspiration, and to cover up their ignorance.
When the prideful ignorant egoistic mind cannot explain certain thing because it doesn't know and doesn't understand, it will justify, "Ah! It's my (your) bad karma from my (your) past lives. I (You) have to accept it." Or, "It's because of bad karma, that's why I am (you are) suffering." Or, "Everything is the will of the Almighty. It's nothing to do with me." Or, "Don't question. It's sinful and punishable. Just obey and follow."
That's why the acknowledgement towards the presence of ignorance in the mind without attachment or judgment, is highly important for initiating the desire to be free from ignorance, to inquire the truth of everything, to attain direct understanding, instead of trying to cover up one's ignorance with many kinds of justification, fooling oneself and others.
Inquire towards the truth of everything.
