chapter 17 - Actual illness

All functional minds have the same function of having similar habits and characteristics of being egoistic and being in the impermanent state of satisfaction, dissatisfaction, disappointment, happiness, unhappiness, joyfulness, joylessness, sadness, painful sorrow, grief, love, hate, anger, greed, ignorance, pride, arrogance, jealousy, possessiveness, sense of belonging, selfishness, self protection, self justification, fear, worry, shame, guilt, regret, and doubt, to know, to understand, to learn, to experience, to compare, to discriminate, to judge, to praise and criticize, to compete, ceaselessly discontented having endless and boundless desires and ambitions waiting to be fulfilled, to socialize, to mingle, to share, to express, have likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements, needs and wants, strengths and weaknesses, and all the positive and negative or constructive and destructive elements or qualities.

And all these came from our mind. Anger, hatred, jealousy, greed, craving, aversion, selfishness, possessiveness, identification, attachment, comparison, judgment, expectation, longing, pride, arrogance, anxiety, irritation, frustration, impatience, stress, hypocrisy, worry, fear, discontentment, swaying in between satisfaction and dissatisfaction, accomplishment and non-accomplishment, or happiness and unhappiness, and all kinds of negative or violent destructive thoughts and feelings are generating so much tension or disruption into the bodily systems.

The defense immune system of the body towards infectious and non infectious diseases is being hammered and breaking down unnecessarily.

These mind impurities are the real enemies to our overall well-being. Above all, the health of the mind is far more important than the health of the body. We are powerless to fight the natural impermanent decaying effect of the body, but we have absolute power to keep our mind as healthy as possible, only if we are aware of the danger of a sick mind and we want to do something about it.

A human being born with a weak and imperfect physical body does not hinder the functional mind from working towards transcending the mind perception towards all kinds of selfless and impermanent names and forms to realize absolute knowledge and unconditional peace. But a healthy and perfect body cannot lead towards absolute knowledge and unconditional peace, if the mind is full of impurities.

A strong and healthy body is no doubt a better and convenient vehicle or instrument for the mind to engage in the journey of self-transcendence to transcend its own selfless impermanent limited and conditional existence and function, but it does not guarantee self realization. Sometimes the strong and perfect body is being taken for granted and gives rise to all kinds of distraction, and hence, it becomes an obstacle in the path of self realization.

We need to take care of the overall well-being of the body and mind, make good use of the good  condition of the body and mind to be kind to ourselves and others and the surrounding environment, and as an instrument for achieving self realization, to serve humanity, or to perform selfless service, but without attachment towards this selfless impermanent limited and conditional existence and function of the body and mind.

About Yoga

Know thyself. Everything is impermanent and selfless. There is no 'I'. There is no 'I am selfless'/'I am not selfless'. There is no 'I am hurt'/'I need to be healed from hurt'. Non-blind believing, non-blind following, non-blind practicing and non-blind propagating, but be open-minded to inquire the truth of everything. Be free. Be peaceful. Be happy.
