Wisdom and compassion

It's normal that all kinds of discrimination, selfishness, and cruelty are existing and increasing in the world of many diversities that doesn't belong to anyone.

Because there are, and there will be, more and more minds functioning under the influence of ignorance and egoism, where they all have one same tendency, which is to impose control, interference, rules and regulations, restriction, oppression, violence, cruelty, and punishment towards some others, including their own family members/partner/children, not to say, those that they recognized as 'not one of them'/'non-compliant towards their particular belief, values, desires, vision, behavior, and practice'/'potential competitor'/'enemy'/'threat'/'obstacle', and towards something that they dislike and disagree with, based on their own particular thinking, belief, values, desires/don't desires, practice, vision, or ambition.

Selfishness, possessiveness, sense of belonging, sense of pride, identity pride, social status pride, community pride, family pride, association pride, origin pride, lineage pride, national pride, regional pride, cultural pride, spiritual pride, knowledge pride, achievement pride, self-righteousness, obsessiveness, oversensitiveness, defensiveness, offensiveness, envy, anger, hatred, greed, fear, and so on, are serious form of mental illness. They are the by-products of ignorance and egoism, and are all leading towards the rise of discrimination, selfishness, and cruelty in the world.

Except in absolute solitude and seclusion, or complete silence, in one's own selfless impermanent function and existence of the mind supported by selfless energy and elements, especially upon the absence of ignorance, where the mind is merely being what it is, devoid of restlessness/impurities/disturbance/qualities/dualities, without engaging in certain physical/mental passionate egoistic activities/inputs and outputs/actions/interactions/duties/commitments, either wittingly or unwittingly, there is very little and even complete absence of any kind of freedom, or there is only partial/restricted/limited/conditional freedom, just by being momentarily functioning and existing in a selfless impermanent world that is full of minds that are functioning under the influence of ignorance and egoism, where there is absence of wisdom (correct understanding) and compassion, that embrace openness, non-discrimination, non-separateness, non-interference, non-violence, non-attachment, non-identification, non-clinging, non-craving, non-aversion, non-judgment, non-expectation, desirelessness, non-possessiveness, independence, the absence of worldly passionate egoistic ideas/thinking/belief/values/desires/visions/practice, the absence of all kinds of pride/shame, the absence of identification and self-righteousness, the absence of superiority and inferiority, the absence of fear and greed, the absence of jealousy, anger, and hatred, the absence of the urge to control and interfere, and that promote letting go, patience, tolerance, forbearance, acceptance, accommodation, adjustment, adaptation, respect, generosity, kindness, and, freedom of existence/living/movement/being what all and everyone are.

The minds that are free from ignorance and egoism, that are devoid of attachment, identification, desire of craving and aversion, possessiveness, fear, discontentment, greed, or painful sorrow, they don't impose control/interference/rules and regulations/restriction/oppression/violence/punishment towards anyone or anything, not even their own family members/partner/children, respecting all and everyone to be what they are, as they are, not to say, all the others that have their own particular ties and connection, background, history, experience/non-experience, understanding/non-understanding, thinking, belief/disbelief, values, desires, behavior, way of living, and practice, where all and everyone are responsible towards themselves/the state of mind/the modification of the mind/their understanding and non-understanding/their desires and don't desires/their actions and the fruits/outcomes/consequences of their actions.

Meanwhile, under the presence of wisdom and compassion, the selfless minds can merely provide the correct understanding, knowledge, direct experience/realization, guidance, and support that might help to uplift the minds that are functioning under the influence of ignorance, that are egoistic, restless, impure, discontented, disturbed, confused, violent, distressed, or in painful suffering, unconditionally without attachment, identification, craving, aversion, comparison, judgment, or expectation, showing them the path towards self-inquiry and self-realization, while allow all and everyone to receive or reject, to evolve as they are, and to be what they are.

Just as the sun, or the nature, merely being what it is - selfless, desireless, intentionless, and impermanent.

The truth of selflessness and impermanence in all and everyone and everything, is the only existing 'freedom' that all and everyone have while being existing momentarily, selflessly, and impermanently in this space that doesn't belong to anyone and anything, where none, not even oneself, can control/interfere/change/modify/destroy.

Knowing and accumulating all kinds of knowledge/information/technology/skill in this world doesn't guarantee peace in oneself, that can help to contribute more kindness, peace and harmony into the world of many diversities.

Knowing and respecting the truth of selflessness and impermanence will.

Inquire the truth of everything.

The selfless mind is still the same selfless mind while under going self-transformation and upon self-realization

In the teachings of yoga, all kinds of teachings and practice served the purpose of enabling the selfless perceptive cognitive intellectual emotional thinking and acting mind to be free from the idea of 'I', ignorance, egoism, impurities and restlessness, to realize the truth of selflessness and impermanence, to know itself, and thus, be free from the suffering deriving from ignorance and its by-products.

That transformative process is being referred as self-transformation or self-evolution, however, the mind is still the same mind, it doesn't change into something else that it is not, even having under going many transformational modifications or changes. The mind might be thinking, understanding, feeling, desiring, behaving, acting and reacting differently from before, the states of the mind is never the same from moment to moment, the modifications of the mind is constantly changing, but it is still the same selfless mind existing and functioning selflessly and momentarily under the selfless impermanent existence and function of the same selfless physical body that is constantly changing, where the selfless physical body is not the same appearance or condition from moment to moment, but it is still the same selfless physical body.

There's neither right nor wrong when the different minds understand that "It's not the same body (in terms of appearance and condition) and mind (in terms of the states of mind and behavior pattern) every moment because of selfless impermanent changes" and "It's still the same body and mind even though it's under going ceaseless selfless impermanent changes, transforming into different physical appearance and condition, and transitioning in different states of the mind and behavior pattern, from the moment it exists until it ceased existing." Both are equally correct under different points of view. It's nothing contradicting at all. But regardless of the different understanding due to the different points of view, the body and mind is selfless and impermanent is the inevitable truth, where there is no permanent independent individual infinite existence of 'I' existing in the selfless impermanent mortal body and mind that is constantly changing, decaying and disintegrating.

The car is still the same car, even if it's under going ceaseless impermanent changes of decaying, and eventually, it will be retired and ceased functioning, where the exterior appearance and the interior compartments and decorations, might have been being modified or replaced in countless times that it is not the 'same' car every moment, even if it has been going through changing owners and/or registration plate number.

Some minds might be confused towards how come the mind is still what it is, that the mind is still the same mind, even when it is under going all kinds of practice to be modifying itself, experiencing self-transformation, and attaining self-realization? Such as quite many 'buddhists' would think that one will become a 'buddha' upon enlightenment, where 'buddha' is someone or something that is superior, being separated or distinct from an inferior mind, or person, or living being that is ignorant, selfish, evil, greedy and impure.

One doesn't perform certain practices and become a 'buddha', or one doesn't become 'selfless' and 'compassionate'. All and everything are 'buddha', all are selfless and compassionate, regardless of whether one performs or doesn't perform certain practices, knows or doesn't know that, realizes or doesn't realize that, and attaining enlightenment, or not.

No doubt that there are certain gross and subtle changes or transformations happening to the selfless function, or modification, or state of the mind, while the mind is performing certain practices that served the purpose of disciplining the mind, purifying the mind and quieting the mind, in order to be eliminating the idea of 'I', ignorance, egoism, impurities and restlessness.

However, the mind is still the same mind, it is still what it is, being selfless and impermanent, it doesn't change into something else that is not what it is, regardless of whether all these modifications, changes or transformations are happening, or not.

The only difference is, when this selfless mind is functioning under the veil of ignorance and its by-products, it doesn't know or doesn't understand itself, or what is going on in itself, or why it perceives suffering, or what is suffering, or what is the cause of suffering, and hence, it might think, reason, understand, feel, desire, behave, act and react in the way that hurt itself and others and the surrounding environment due to being ignorant, or it is functioning under the influence of the veil of ignorance and its by-products.

Upon the annihilation of the veil of ignorance and its by-products, or upon self-realization towards the selflessness and impermanence in itself and in all kinds of perceived names and forms, of knowing Thyself, of knowing the truth of names and forms, the mind wouldn't be thinking, reasoning, understanding, feeling, behaving, acting and reacting in the way that hurt itself, or others, or the surrounding environment.

The selfless existence and function of the selfless mind and the selfless physical body doesn't change into something else. It doesn't become selfless. It is selfless, regardless of whether the mind knows or doesn't know about it's existence and function is selfless. It doesn't change and become something permanent, or immortal, or infinite. It is either being restless, or being less restless and more quiet, or resting in silence, during its selfless impermanent existence and function. It is the same selfless and impermanent before, during and after the transformation and upon self-realization, even though it keeps under going ceaseless selfless impermanent changes or transformations until it ceased functioning and ceased existing.

Selflessness isn't something saintly, sacred or mystical. Selflessness is not something to be attained and becoming. Selflessness doesn't only present in the enlightened buddhas, gurus, saints and sages, or is absent in the non-enlightened ignorant, selfish, impure and suffering beings. Selflessness in not about unselfishness. Selflessness is not the opposite of selfishness. All and everything don't attain selflessness and become selfless. All and everything are selfless, regardless of what.

Selflessness is there is no existence of an individual permanent independent existence of 'I' in all kinds of selfless impermanent names and forms.

It's whether the mind realized selflessness under the absence of the idea of 'I' and ignorance, or hasn't realized selflessness under the presence of the idea of 'I' and ignorance.

And thus, "All and everything is dhamma. All and everything are buddha." - Siddhartha Gautama Buddha

Selflessness.

Impermanence.

Non-duality.

Non-discrimination.

Non-separateness.

Oneness.

Fearlessness.

Void of 'I'.

Void of grasping.

Void of desire.

Void of ignorance.

Void of suffering.

Void of restlessness.

Unconditional peace.

Timelessness.

Silence.

There's neither past nor future, there's only now.

It's merely selfless impermanent names and forms arising, changing and passing away, inter-depending and inter-influencing among one another selflessly, governed by cause and effect, influenced by actions and consequences of actions, under the support and influence of different selfless elements and selfless energy that are also inter-depending and inter-influencing one another selflessly.

All these different terms are one.

Dhamma, or the truth of selflessness and impermanence, is neither sacred nor non-sacred. It is what it is. It is what all and everything are. It cannot be changed, be contaminated, be hurt, be disrespected, be humiliated, be offended, or be destroyed.

Regardless of the absence and presence of ignorance, the different degrees of ignorance, the different types and degrees of suffering, the different states of mind of interchanging in different realms, the different qualities of different names and forms, the different thinking, beliefs, understanding, desires, behaviors, actions and reactions, and the different consequences of all that, all and everyone and everything is selfless and impermanent.

What doesn't change, that is permanent, that is infinite, that is timeless, is the truth of selflessness and impermanence.

Because all are selfless, there's not a permanent independent infinite 'I' existing to be identifying as "I am this" or "I am that", or "I am neither this nor that", or "I am under going selfless impermanent changes", or "I am under going the infinite restless loop of ceaseless births and deaths", or "I need to be free from all that". It doesn't mean that all these don't exist, or there's no selfless impermanent changes, or there's no restless ceaseless births and deaths, or there's no perception of suffering deriving from being ignorant.

The selfless physical body that comes with the selfless thinking and acting faculty exists selflessly and momentarily. All kinds of selfless names and forms exist selflessly and momentarily. The selfless impermanent changes are happening ceaselessly. The ones that are under going restless ceaseless births and deaths is every single selfless neutron, cell and atom in the selfless physical body, and every single selfless thought arising, changing and passing away in the selfless modification of the selfless mind. The different realms are the different states of the mind. The one that is transitioning in between the different realms is the selfless thinking faculty. Cause and effect exists. Actions and consequences of actions exists.

The one that performs actions through the selfless organs of actions, and either enjoying or suffering for the consequences of actions, that affects the selfless physical body and the selfless states of the mind in certain way, is the selfless thinking faculty. The one that is happy or unhappy, kind or unkind, ignorant or wise, selfish or unselfish, is the selfless thinking faculty.

The one that is not free, that is restless, that is in painful sorrow and suffering, being bound by selfless impermanent changes governed by cause and effect, influenced by actions and consequences of actions, as well as perceiving or experiencing suffering deriving from ignorance, is the selfless thinking faculty functioning under the presence of the veil of ignorance and its by-products.

The one that has intense yearning towards liberation, that has certain degrees of awareness and will power/freewill to be performing certain practices to be free from all that, is the selfless thinking faculty.

The one that can free the selfless thinking faculty from ignorance, is the selfless thinking faculty itself.

It's not even "I am selfless", or "I am That, which is selfless, infinite, unlimited, unconditional, beginningless, endless, birthless, deathless, timeless and changeless," as even That, is also selfless, that doesn't belong to anyone or anything, that doesn't possess or own anything, that doesn't control anything, but all and everything are arising, changing and passing away upon it, under their own cause and effect.

If something that exists infinitely is not selfless, is something sentient, that has been witnessing all kinds of names and forms arising, changing and passing away governed by cause and effect, and witnessing all kinds of painful sorrow and suffering in all kinds of sentient living beings functioning under the veil of ignorance, then that is the greatest suffering in the entire universe of all time, as that is permanent and infinite.

Just as the selfless physical body doesn't exist or function without the selfless neutrons, cells and atoms forming the entire complex selfless physical body with the function of the selfless thinking faculty, supported by the selfless elements and selfless energy, where all these are inter-depending and inter-influencing among one another to be what they are. While each selfless element, energy, neutron, cell or atom doesn't belong to the selfless physical body, and vice versa. Each selfless element, energy, neutron, cell or atom doesn't have an existence of 'I' to be identifying as "I am element/energy/neutron/cell/atom" or with the selfless physical body. And the selfless physical body doesn't have an existence of 'I' to be identifying with the selfless elements, energy, neutrons, cells and atoms.

Go beyond all kinds of identifications. Go beyond "I am That", "I am infinite", "I am all compassionate", "I am all wise", "I am all powerful", "I am all existence", "I am all knowledge", "I am strong", "I am positive", "I am happiness", and so on.

What is selfless, it doesn't have an existence of 'I' to be what it is, to be identifying with anything, to be possessing/owning anything, or to be belonging to anything.

Inquire the truth of everything.

Discrimination has no limit, but fear not

Discrimination is the product of ignorance and egoism.

Void of ignorance and egoism, there's no discrimination existing in this mind, even if discrimination exists in other minds.

Discrimination has no limit.

Someone who identifies oneself as a citizen of a country, might think that, "Oh, for sure I will not be discriminated by all the other citizens of this same country." Nope. This person is being discriminated because of its ethnicity being different from the others within the same citizenship of the same country.

Then this person might think that, "Okay. Then for sure I will not be discriminated by all the others within the same ethnicity with the same cultural background within the same country." Nope. This person is being discriminated because of its birth place under a particular state among the many different states in the same country.

Then this person might think that, "Okay. Then for sure I will not be discriminated by all the others within the same ethnicity with the same cultural background with the same birth place under the same state within the same country." Nope. This person is being discriminated because of its family background and social status.

Then this person might think that, "Okay. Then for sure I will not be discriminated by all the others in my own family of the same background and the same social status." Nope. This person is being discriminated because of its gender.

Then this person might think that, "Okay. Then for sure I will not be discriminated by all the others of the same gender within the same family." Nope. This person is being discriminated because of merely being different from the others in certain way, and someone doesn't like about it.

Then this person might think that, "Okay. Then for sure I will not be discriminated by myself. Right?" Nope. There is always something that this person doesn't like or satisfy about itself, that it can't accept and love itself as it is, and there's desire to be changing and controlling what it doesn't like and doesn't satisfy about itself to become something that it likes and satisfies with. If it couldn't be changed or be controlled according to one's desire, one will want to get rid of those qualities that it doesn't like and doesn't want. Even when it gets a few moments of liking and satisfaction towards itself for being the way that it likes and agrees with, but then, very soon, it will start to feel dislike and dissatisfy about itself again, due to the nature of impermanence as well as the birth of ceaseless new desires in it.

It's because of ignorance and egoism, where there's presence of attachment, identification, desire of craving and aversion, comparison, judgment and expectation, anyone can be discriminating towards anyone and anything for something, starting from within oneself, being dislike, dissatisfy and disagree with something about oneself. From there, there's no limit of discrimination towards anyone and anything that one doesn't like and disagrees with.

Discrimination has no limit due to ignorance and egoism, however, there's an end to it upon the annihilation of ignorance and egoism from within oneself.

The only limitation or challenge, is that no one can remove the ignorance and egoism for one another. Not even Buddha, Guru, or any enlightened beings can take away some others' ignorance and egoism, and the corruption and suffering deriving from ignorance and egoism. As if that is possible, then all and everyone were/are already be free from ignorance and egoism, and the world is being free from all kinds of corruption and suffering. Beware of, and stay away from any 'Gurus' or 'yoga teachers' claiming to be having the 'transcendental power' to 'heal' anyone for anything, or to give enlightenment to some others.

It has to come from one's self-awareness and self-acknowledgement towards the ignorance and egoism in oneself, and have self-initiative and self-effort to free oneself from ignorance and egoism through self-discipline, self-purification, self-control, independence, patience, perseverance and determination, and all these practice is being done without attachment and identification (towards the impure corrupted modification of the mind, the ignorance, the practice and the action of performing the practice), without desire of craving (towards the absence of ignorance) and aversion (towards the presence of ignorance), and without comparison, judgment or expectation (towards the progress and the fruit of practice). Allowing the practice, the progress and the fruit of practice being what it is, as it is, at its own pace and causation.

Through that, the mind will realize what is "Selfless, intentionless and desireless actions being performed out of compassion."

Most minds don't like to hear about dispassion and renunciation

It's understandable that most minds/people don't like to hear about or even react with anger and hatred towards the teaching and practice of dispassion and renunciation in yoga and Buddhism.

This doesn't exclude many of the highly intelligent, talented, educated, knowledgeable and so called successful/powerful people/influencers in the world, who might not be aware of the influence of ignorance and egoism in themselves, who are surviving in this world playing along with the game of capitalism and commercialism that exploits all and everything as much as possible utilizing the higher science and technology, in order to achieve higher and unlimited success and wealth for securing survival, pleasurable enjoyment and comfort for oneself.

People who believe in the meaning or goal of life existence is about equipping oneself from young with all kinds of education, qualification, skill, knowledge, connection, social networking and experiences, to be highly ambitious, with the intention and aspiration plus determination and perseverance for striving to be attaining and accumulating more and more success/wealth that are more than enough for basic survival, in order to be supporting and maintaining certain comfortable and pleasurable lifestyle, to fit into 'the successful and wealthy rich upper class' category, they are the fuel that feed capitalism and commercialism surviving from exploiting all kinds of natural resources, nature, animals and human beings in the world as much as possible.

Out of survival instinct and greed, the minds that are functioning under the influence of ignorance and egoism would want to defend and protect themselves, their life existence, their survival, their livelihood or source of wealth, their accumulated wealth and possessions, their career or business, their inherited or adopted belief, values and practice, and their pride, from the intimidation deriving from any teachings or practices that not only don't support capitalism and commercialism, but are unintentionally, existing as the biggest threat/obstacle towards the prosperity of capitalism and commercialism, or in another term, GREED, and POWER that supports and empowers GREED.

Most of the empowerment workshops in the world are about equipping oneself with the 'qualities' in order to attain higher and unlimited success and wealth, to be inspired and being aspired to become highly ambitious and successful, which turn into GREED and PRIDE unwittingly, with the main aspiration of to be achieving and supporting certain lifestyle of higher and unlimited comfort, new interests, new activities, new toys, new adventures, new excitements and pleasurable enjoyments, that gives rise to and empowers the sense of goodness, satisfaction, positiveness, joyfulness, accomplishment, pride and meaningfulness.

No any advertisements can tempt the minds that are dispassionate. No any salesmen can sell their products/creations/ideas/values to the minds that renounced the world. No any politicians can manipulate the minds that are free from ignorance and egoism. No any 'amazing inspirational quotes of passionate inspiration' can move or cheat the minds that are dispassionate. No any businesses that are surviving on the egoism, discontentment, greed and fear of human beings can survive, if all and everyone are dispassionate and renounce the world of ignorance and egoism, or are free from ignorance and egoism.

The huge business of 'medical health care', 'body, facial and hair care', 'beauty and cosmetic', 'fitness and fitness related products and services', 'dietary supplement', 'spiritual healing', 'fashions and accessories', 'home appliances and decor', 'luxurious holiday', 'recreational food and beverage', 'social media platforms', 'cars', 'gadgets', 'games', 'toys', 'sports', 'trendy lifestyle', 'leisure activities', 'real estate', 'insurance', and so on, are surviving on human beings' ignorance and egoism, passionate desires of craving and aversion, fear and discontentment/greed. Almost everyone are trying to 'sell' something, to gain certain profits or rewards that they desire, either in the form of money or something else. Young children are being brought up to admire and be inspired by 'successful, powerful and wealthy rich' human beings, to become like them, whom are being identified as 'inspirational most successful people in the world being determined by their wealth and power status', who are not necessarily being free from selfishness and corruption, who are not necessarily using their power, knowledge, position and wealth, or advance science and technology, to be looking after the general welfare of all and everyone and the environment, but only to fulfill their personal or community selfish ambitions, of GREED, POWER and PRIDE.

Even Swami Sivananda renounced his job as medical doctor, after realizing the corruptions in the world of ignorance and egoism cannot be eliminated through medical health care of advance science and technology, as even the physically strong and healthy human beings who are free from illness and disability, who are highly educated and knowledgeable, might not necessarily be free from ignorance and the by-products of ignorance, and hence, he immersed into serious Sadhana to realize the path that leads towards liberation from all these corruptions.

Inquire towards the truth of everything, freeing one's mind from the influence of ignorance and egoism, particularly those who are angry and disgusted towards the many human made destruction in the world of human beings, who have great aspiration to help to make the world a better place for all and everyone without discrimination, or to reduce unnecessary human made suffering in the world, or to advocate awareness for world peace, non-violence, non-discrimination, equal rights and mental health, or to protect the over-all welfare of all and everything and the environment.

Many minds might think and believe that hardships, poverty, difficult life condition, sickness or low education are the cause of misery and suffering, but it's not necessary so. Those who are free from hardships, poverty, difficult life condition, sickness or low education, but might not necessarily be free from unrest and suffering due to ignorance and egoism. Those who are free from ignorance and egoism, they are free from unrest and suffering, regardless of whether being free from hardships, poverty, difficult life condition, sickness or low education, or not.

In the beginning, the world of business/trading is neither good nor bad, where most businesses are just purely about exchanging different kinds of goods and harvests for diversity, however, due to ignorance and egoism in human beings, there are many kinds of corruption, exploitation and destruction arising from the world of business, out of never ending GREED.

GREED doesn't just manifest in the world of capitalism and commercialism, where the businessmen are greedy for higher profits and the consumers are greedy for higher possession, convenience, comfort and pleasurable enjoyment. But, it also manifests in the world of spirituality.

The teachings from ancient until the present, never change. Where ignorance and egoism is indeed the root cause of all kinds of suffering or bondage, while the greatest obstacles towards liberation from ignorance and egoism, is endless PASSION, DESIRE, GREED, and PRIDE. The subside of passion, desire, greed and pride, is the annihilation of egoism, that removes the veil of ignorance, that uncovers unconditional peace and selfless compassion.

Want to learn and practice yoga? (24)

In certain social and cultural thinking, belief, values and practice, people are being taught about the benefits of making as many friends as possible, while making as less enemies as possible, in order to make life easier and less difficult.

The parents told the young children, "At home, you depend on family. Outside, at school, at work place, in career, in business, in social status and wealth, you depend on friends and connections."

The main intention and aspiration for building and expanding one's social connections and personal friends circle, is about getting as much love, care, help and support as possible, while getting as less obstacles and hardships as possible, in order to be advancing and attaining higher and higher success in one's life, career, business, status, or wealth.

People have the idea and values of "Friends are being there to be caring, loving, helping and supporting one another physically, mentally, emotionally or financially, especially during difficult times, where it will make life more easy and less difficult."

'Personal friends' or 'social connections' are being seen as one of the important assets that one should be accumulating and appreciating in order to be successful, joyful and meaningful in life.

People are being conditioned to think and believe that, "Having very few friends, or not having many friends in one's life, or not having any personal friends at all, to be playing, enjoying and sharing life with, or to be supporting and interacting with physically, mentally and emotionally, is something terrible and miserable, bad and wrong. Where one's life is doomed to be lonely, dulled, sad, joyless and meaningless, if without many or any personal friends, or life is doomed to be more hard, miserable and suffering, if without many or any social connections."

The sense of self-esteem, self-worth, confidence, success, positiveness and meaningfulness that doesn't need to be there in any human beings, is very much being determined by the quantity and quality of the personal friends circle and the social connections or social networking. Many people spend a lot of time and effort performing certain actions in order to be pleasing some others for getting the liking and acceptance, to be making friendship or building social connection with some others.

Some people who don't have spouse or children, or don't want to have spouse or children will be comforting themselves or be consoled by others, "I (You) don't have spouse or children, but at least, I (you) have many friends." Most people cannot understand that how come someone can be alone by oneself, and still be peaceful and happy, free from loneliness or self-pity.

Similarly, in certain worldly spiritual, religious and political thinking, belief, values and practice, making as many connections, members, followers, supporters and contributors as possible, in order to achieve certain selfish desire, aspiration or ambition, to be preserving, expanding, protecting and empowering one's particular spirituality, or religion, or political/national existence, identity, ideas, values and movements.

In the teachings and practice of Yoga and Buddhism, it's about letting go such thinking, belief, values and practice that is about making many personal friendships as well as social connections with the selfish intention to be benefiting oneself in certain way, to achieve one's personal desires and ambitions, or to get rid of loneliness, boredom and meaninglessness, but it's about be truly friendly, helpful and kind towards all beings without any selfish intention or expectation, out of humanity and compassion, without discrimination of 'friends' or 'not friends', 'connections' or 'non-connections', 'my people' or 'not my people'.

Be kind, friendly and helpful towards all and everyone, and provide necessary assistance particularly towards those who are 'truly' in need of certain help, within one's reach and ability, without discrimination or expectation. Being kind, friendly and helpful but ignorantly providing 'requested help' to those who don't really need help at all, but merely to be taking advantage of 'friends' and 'connections' to enjoy certain conveniences and benefits for oneself, doesn't help the world to have less ignorance and the consequences of ignorance.

Free from the idea and values of "Making as many friends as possible so that one will always have some friends to play with at anytime, because sometimes certain friends might not be available to be there for oneself, but at least there are many more other friends that might still be available to play with, or to be there for oneself whenever one needs help, or whenever one encounters any difficulties in life."

Many people might not be aware of that is what they have been learning and practicing from young, as well as passing down those selfish thinking, belief, values and practice onto their next generations, which they think is normal, and there's nothing selfish about it.

In social and cultural idea and values,

"Friends/connections are something good and positive."

"Friends/connections are there to make life easier and less difficult, more meaningful and less lonely."

"Friends/connections are there to help one's career and business to grow and be successful."

"Friends/connections are there to play with, to comfort, support and stand up for each other, and to protect one another."

"Friends/connections are there for helping one another to achieve everyone's aspirations and ambitions in life."

"You are not my friend, or you are not a good friend, because you are not there for me when I needed you, and you didn't keep in touch or stay connected with me for so long."

In certain spiritual, religious and political idea and values,

"You support me, I'll support you. You help me, I'll help you. You scratch my back, I'll scratch your back, and vice versa."

"You disagree with me and go against me, or you disrespect and disobey me, I'll punish and hurt you."

"The friends of my enemies are my enemies. The enemies of my enemies are my friends."

In the teachings and practice of Yoga and Buddhism,

Regardless of whether staying or not staying in touch/connected, with or without personal friendship/connection, agreeable or disagreeable, one just be kind and friendly to all, without discrimination, without selfish intention or expectation.

The best help to all humanity, is helping and guiding all, without discrimination, to be free from ignorance and egoism, which is the root cause of suffering arising in oneself and inflicting unto others, and not empowering the ignorance and egoism in the minds.

Inquire the truth of everything.

My life stories - Part 15 (Letting go)

My life Stories – Part 15 (Letting go)
Stories from my past memories – childhood, family, friends, growing up, poverty, integrity, dreams come true, finding peace and happiness, Buddhism, Yoga, and now…

Here we are. In France, in this present moment.

We had no idea of how, what, and where, at the time when we decided that we wanted to go somewhere else. We only knew that we had to leave this place and go somewhere else. We knew that we needed to organize certain things that needed to be done that allowed things to be happening. We had been living on our savings for the past two years, and it will be running out soon. We needed to make use of the remaining savings to seek opportunity somewhere else, to be in a place that welcomes us, that allows us to be making an honest living, that enables us to live a simple life.

It's not an issue for me at all, to let go all our 'things', to leave a familiar place that we have been living in for many years, or to go somewhere else to start a new life where there are many things that I am not familiar with, that I have to learn or relearn, and to make adjustment, adaptation and accommodation. As I never have strong attachment towards places, things, activities, cultures, food, or people. And I'm always open and ready for learning and experiencing something that I'm not familiar with, that I've never come in contact before. I am without any expectation.

In the beginning, we were considering about moving to Taiwan. We like, and want to support the democracy and freedom of expression that exists in Taiwan.

My husband had a few years of experience in teaching young children in a school when he was living in France many years ago, and in the beginning when he moved to live with me in Malaysia, he mentioned to me that he was interested to do a TEFL course.

I encouraged him to take up an online TEFL course in May 2021 during the prolonged lockdown in Malaysia, as there might be possible opportunity for him to find an English teaching job in Taiwan. Investment in education or further studies is always the best kind of investment one could have, that is never wasted. The knowledge and skill that we learned will always enhance our life in certain ways, even if we don't make a professional living out of it.

At the same time, I encouraged him to keep an eye on any job opportunity anywhere in Europe, especially France, as we both love many things about France very much. He lived in France for twelve years in the past. He had many years of experience in the field of hotel and restaurant management, on top of our many years of teaching yoga and running retreats. It doesn't matter if the salary is just enough for us to survive, we just needed to be opened, and seize any opportunity that allows us to start a new life, somewhere, anywhere, it doesn't matter.

Not long after we considered about moving to Taiwan, news came about the political tension building up between China and Taiwan, as well as the border closing not receiving any foreign teachers at that time due to the pandemic, which made us reconsidered about many things, and decided not to go there at this time being.

And if he didn't manage to get any job offer by the end of December, we will just buy a one way flight ticket to enter France via Paris, and then we will decide where we want to go in France, especially somewhere in the south, as there is where we would like to live in, even though we still didn't know where exactly and whether he would be able to get a job, or if we would be able to do something for a living. We also knew that it might not be easy for my husband to get a job at his age and during this crazy pandemic. But I said to my husband, "Just try, and see what happens." My husband would prefer to have certain degrees of certainty to feel 'secured', but I have no fear towards the unknown. All I know is that just follow what life brings to us, be opened, and see what happens. France is also very close to Ireland. My husband's parents are a lot older now, and their health is not as good as before, and so, it will be easier for us to visit them in the near future.

I just needed two months time to give notice to terminate the apartment's rental agreement as well as to organize everything that needed to be done before we leave this country. I needed to sort out any thing that is related to legal paper works that deals with the different government departments, both this and the other country, on top of clearing everything out from the apartment and selling my car, while doing our best not to contract the virus, so that we can fly out on the departure day. I had no idea of how things should be done, but I just did it one by one, as I went along.

Even when our landlord and some other friends asked us where were we heading to, we told them that nothing is confirmed, which was true, and they all couldn't understand and puzzled, "What? You are leaving Malaysia but you don't know where you are going? Really?"

Things didn't fall into places until the last minute.

In the beginning after my husband sent out many job applications for vacancy at hotel and restaurant, there were no replies. My husband was a little disappointed and felt down about himself. I said to him, "It's not that you are not good enough, and your age is not an issue, but things didn't happen as it's not the right timing." And it doesn't matter if he couldn't get any job, as I will think of something that I can do to make a living. I also told him that he should put his past 16 years experience on practicing yoga, teaching yoga and running yoga retreats, as well as Yoga Now Malaysia's profile into his resume. And then, great things started to happen.

A four star hotel under a big name, as well as two other hotels, a 5 star boutique hotel and a 3 star hotel chain replied, and they were interested to have an online interview with him. He chose to go for the interview with the four star hotel as it is located in the Alps which is a very nice area to live in. During the interview, he just needed to be himself, a very warm, kind and friendly person. He went through three separate interviews with different managers, and he was given the job in the end. Even though nothing was actually confirmed until the moment we arrived and he signed the work contract.

It was a challenging process with a few hiccups from the preparation of the journey of moving until we arrived at our final destination, especially organizing things that needed to be done and travelling during the pandemic amid the surge of 'Omicron', but we managed to glide through all the obstacles one by one.

We wanted to let go most of our stuffs and just keep some important documents and few things that worth nothing but are important to us in our life. We packed our things into three small boxes to send by post before we left, and then another 2 suitcases and 2 backpacks with mostly heavy winter clothing and some important documents to come with us into the flight.

We knew that during the pandemic, it's not easy to give away our things, not to say, to sell some of our things that are still in very good condition. Thankfully, three of our yoga students would take all of our yoga stuffs. While there were some charity organizations in town that were interested in receiving certain household things, but they wouldn't come to pick up the stuffs.

And then one day, while I was waiting at the dental clinic as my husband was having his teeth cleaned up, I asked the receptionist for a recommendation of a lorry driver, that I have household things to clear out from the apartment. Just happened that a lady was there to accompany her uncle for dental work and she over heard our conversation, and was really excited to introduce her uncle to me, where this uncle who is a chicken seller at the morning market has just received his new low cost apartment, but he has no budget for buying furniture and household things for his new home. This uncle was very happy to take some of our stuffs and he would organize a lorry to come to pick up the stuffs from us. We also gave away the remaining of all our things to the Nepali security guards and the Indonesian and Bangladeshi cleaners at our condominium. They were very happy about it.

We wanted to get our booster vaccination before we left, if possible. We were being told that we needed to wait for our appointment given by the health ministry which won't be happening until after the end of February, however, on the last week of December, my husband found out from twitter that we could call the hospital and ask if we can walk in on certain day. We called the hospital, and they gave us an appointment date on the 31st of December. And so, we went and got our booster shot on the last day of 2021. We were so lucky that we could get that done before our flight because of the vaccine mandate in France, as one day later the Malaysian government announced that walk-in was no longer available.

I also found a second hand car dealer agent to let go of my 19 years old car that had significantly improved the quality of my life, that had served us and the retreat guests nicely over the years. I signed the selling contract a few weeks before we left, but I could keep using the car until the day before we left. The agent told us that he was very 'touched' when I asked him about how much petrol I needed to keep for him on the day of delivery. He said just a quarter tank would be enough, but in the end, I left him with almost full tank of petrol.

And then, just a few days before we moved out from the apartment, the kitchen's floor tiles shifted and mounted, where underneath the tiles was completely hollow due to poor quality of the building construction, which we informed the landlord immediately. For that last few days, we couldn't walk over those tiles, and we were like walking on the edge of a cliff whenever we wanted to use the kitchen. Anyway, we cleaned up the apartment and did a video recording of checking everything in the apartment on the last morning to prove that everything is in good order when we return the apartment to the landlord. We were glad that we did.

After we sort out everything regarding the apartment with the landlord, and received our deposit from him, as he was satisfied with the apartment was in good condition apart from the mounted kitchen's floor tiling which was not our responsibility, we moved to a hotel in town for our last few days in Penang. We were very careful to keep social distancing with other people until we got our PCR test done on the day before the flight, and we were glad that we had a negative result. But, hiccups had just begun.

Even though our first flight was in the evening, we arrived at the airport just before 2.30 pm for checking our supposedly confirmed connecting flights from Penang to Kuala Lumpur to Dubai to Paris. Again, we were glad that we did. The representative at the check-in counter told us that the flight that we were supposed to get on from Penang to Kuala Lumpur in that evening didn't exist, and the last flight available had just left. We didn't receive any email about changes of flight detail from the airline. They told us that they couldn't do anything to help us and that we needed to contact the airline directly to arrange a different connection. They said that we could try to get the airline to change us to another flight that goes to Subang Airport, but then it will be another long transfer from Subang Airport to KLIA. We really didn't want to risk ourselves exposing to too many individuals during the pandemic. Or else, the airline could change our flights to another day, but that is not possible for us because the immigration department had decided to end my husband long term social visit pass on that particular day, even though the initial expiry date was in March and we had asked them to end the pass on a few days later so that if anything happens that we couldn't fly out on that day (knowing that anything can happen during the pandemic), we still can have a few days time to do something about it.

We had tried to call different numbers of the airline for about an hour, but there was nobody answering. It was about 3.30 pm, and we needed to be in KLIA before 9.00 pm. I said to my husband, we could either get a rental car to KLIA immediately, or we could see if there would be some other flights that could get us to KLIA or KLIA2, regardless of how much it would cost us. We just needed to get things done.

Luckily, there was an AirAsia flight to KLIA2 departing at 4.30 pm. The representative was very helpful to immediately get us the ticket and checked us in by 4.00 pm, and we were running so fast towards the security check and then running to the gate which was located at the very end of the departure hall, even though they said that the flight would wait for us. What they didn't tell us was that the flight was delayed about 15 minutes. Anyway, we had a few minutes to catch our breath before boarding. Our seat numbers given were 32, which didn't exist on that plane, as they had changed from the initial bigger plane to a smaller plane. We were told to wait at the end of the cabin watching everyone coming on board. After everyone were on board, they gave us the priority seats in front of the plane. We were thankful to AirAsia and the friendly helpful staffs. Did the hiccups end there? Not really.

After we arrived in KLIA2, we got our checked baggage and took the train to KLIA, which we shouldn't be doing if we had had our connecting flights all the way from Penang to Paris as what it supposed to be, but it wasn't.

Anyway, we got to KLIA, and went to the check-in counter to complain about what happened, even though it wasn't check-in time yet for our flight from Kuala Lumpur to Dubai to Paris. They said they couldn't do anything, but they could check us in at that time, and we could drop the baggage afterwards when the counter reopened for our flight check-in.

I always have travel sickness issue since young. We also haven't been travelling since the beginning of the pandemic. I also happened to be menstruating during those few days. I thought I did well after taking the taxi from the hotel to the airport, and then taking the flight from Penang to KLIA2, and then taking the train from KLIA2 to KLIA, but I wasn't. I guessed the underlying stress from dealing with the 'non-existing flight' and 'rushing for boarding the first flight' had been accumulating in my body. I vomited for a few times on the first flight and couldn't drink or eat much in order to stop the vomiting. I apologized to the lady who sat beside us for causing any disturbance. Luckily, I felt much better on the second flight, and I was fine after we landed in Paris. Although the handles of one of our baggage was damaged when we went to collect our baggage, but the wheels were still functioning fine, and we were so grateful that we finally arrived in France, safely.

We stayed two nights in Paris to get a good rest from the long journey. My husband also needed to get some clothing for his new job. Somehow, I lost our empty Yoga Now tote bag along the way, which I had to let go as well. We had two beautiful sunny days in Paris before we took two train rides to the Alps. We had enjoyed our very nice first meal in Paris. We had the super tasty Gratin at Le Bistro des Augustins. We also got very nice croissant and pain au chocolat from the bakery.

We went to the train station after checked out from the hotel. As scheduled, we boarded the train and were waiting for the train to go on time, as what it supposed to be. We would have about an hour 15 minutes between the two trains, thinking that we could have our picnic lunch outside the train station before catching our second train, as eating and drinking was not allowed on the train at that time. After waiting for about 30 minutes while watching all the other trains departed from the train station, but our train was still in the idle mode, we were told to move to another train. The next train arrived shortly and we had to wait for another 30 minutes for it to depart. Luckily, we still had 10 minutes to catch the other train.

The hotel management was very thoughtful. They had arranged someone to pick us up from the train station, prepared a very nice and comfortable junior suite room for us to stay temporary until we find our own place to live. That was a great surprise to us, as we thought we would be staying in a double room only. The three boxes that we had sent from Malaysia were already placed in the room. When we arrived in that evening, it was 0 degree, and we haven't eaten anything yet. But the room is comfortably warm, and there's a simple equipped kitchen in the room for us to prepare our own meals as well as there's a dining table. It makes things easier for us, as we wouldn't be able to afford eating out in France. We walked to the nearest supermarket and got ourselves some fresh bread and cheese, fruits and cherry tomatoes, and went back to the room and had a very nice first meal in the Alps.

Since we arrived, everyone that we met, especially all my husband's colleagues in the hotel, were all super friendly and nice. There's no sense of superiority or discrimination here. My husband told me that any kind of discrimination is against the law in France. There are pavements everywhere, and cars actually stop to let pedestrians crossing the road. In Malaysia, we have to put out our hand to stop the cars in order to run across the road as fast as possible even when it's green light for pedestrians to cross, but in France, cars naturally stop for us to cross the road, and in return, we give a hand gesture to say thank you.

On the next day, when the sun has risen, we realized that the view from our hotel room was absolutely incredible. For the next few days, we had very nice sunny days, where we went out to explore the town and further out of the town, to get a feel of where things are, before my husband commits to his new job. I only know very few french words at the moment, and would need to depend on my sign language for certain things. That's okay.

Another important reason why we decided to leave Malaysia and move to Europe is that as a citizen of Malaysia, I don't get much social security or retirement benefits from the government, not to say, as a foreigner, my husband won't be getting any social security or old age retirement benefits from the government for being married to me and living in Malaysia, and for sure, we are now gradually transitioning towards old age. Our old age retirement is very much depending on our savings, which is being highly affected by the pandemic and the long term consequences of it. While as tax paying Europeans and their spouse, they are eligible to be living and working anywhere in Europe, and are eligible for social security, health care and retirement benefits from the government. And most importantly, is about the presence and absence of humanity, freedom of expression, non-discrimination and equal rights.

We had some hiccups along the way, but we also received unexpected helps from somewhere whenever we needed it. We were so grateful for everything. We met very friendly and helpful people. We managed to file a complaint to the airline under the help of one of the airline representatives in KLIA, and the airline responded and would give us back the money that we had paid for the flight getting to KLIA. We also got some compensation from the train delay.

Even though we can't afford to eat out, but the cost of food here in France, particularly in the supermarket, is surprisingly much cheaper than in Malaysia. We always like to have our own home cooked meals. There are many things that my husband wants to do, and food that he likes to eat, are accessible and affordable to us here in France, which it's not the case while we were living in Malaysia. We have been eating well. We sleep well. We have been well looking after. Life is very kind to us.

Thank you.

What humans can learn from the pandemic from the point of yoga

If human beings want, we all can learn something important for humanity from the pandemic.

Those who reluctant to be open and learn, and just want to live inside the comfort zone that they built out of a particular social/cultural/religious/ethnical thinking, belief, values and practice, nobody can force them.

Unless one has developed immunity for the virus, or one is completely isolated from all the existing virus carriers in the world, or one is being void of coming in contact with the virus directly or indirectly, any human beings regardless of possessing the different qualities of names and forms of any particular type of nationality, ethnicity, culture, race, creed, sect, language, community, society, social status, financial status, health status, physical and mental condition/ability/disability, profession, education, knowledge, gender, age, sexual orientation, appearance, thinking, belief/disbelief, religion, lifestyle, food consumption, intelligence, political point of view, behavior, conduct, contribution, personality, talent, skill, achievement, and so on, can be contracting the virus, if they haven't developed the respective immunity, and are coming in contact with the virus or one of the virus carriers, whether directly or indirectly.

The virus doesn't discriminate any quality of names and forms.

The virus doesn't pick who that it infects, or not.

Anything that relates to nature doesn't discriminate anyone or anything, regardless of whether human beings believe or disbelieve in 'God existence', or have any particular cultural, spiritual or religious belief and practice, or not, and whether people are being selfish or unselfish and behaving nicely or badly.

'Non-discrimination' is the essence of nature. It's the nature of the universe. The sun, the space, the earth, the water and the air/wind doesn't discriminate. All and everything exist in the universe being supported by all these selfless non-discriminative elements. It's a simple but upmost important truth of all and everything that exist in the universe.

But, somehow there are so much 'discrimination' of this and that exist in the human's world, under the name of different type of 'country', 'nationality', 'politic', 'constitution law and orders', 'all kinds of rights authorization', 'community', 'society', 'gender', 'age', 'sexual orientation', 'ethnicity', 'culture', 'religion', 'spirituality', 'class', 'creed', 'sect', 'tittle', 'status', 'ability/disability', 'contribution', 'achievement', 'food consumption', 'profession', 'education', 'talent', and so on.

'Discrimination' of any kind is nothing but the by-products of ignorance and egoism.

Any so called 'belief', 'teachings', 'values', 'class', 'creed', 'sect', 'title', 'status' and 'law and orders' that 'discriminate' this and that/who and who, are all creations deriving from human beings under the influence of ignorance and egoism, including those who think and believe that they are somewhat superior, educated, knowledgeable, righteous, good, loving, sympathetic, empathetic, ethical and moral, but are not free from ignorance and egoism. As those who are free from ignorance and egoism are void of such identifications, even if these identifications with such names and forms are being recognized as the 'positive' and 'good' qualities by most human beings.

'Discrimination' shouldn't exist at all, unfortunately, the world is full of human beings under the influence of ignorance and egoism.

Some people would argue about 'financial/title status' makes a difference in the pandemic, as the wealthy and powerful ones will get the 'vaccination' in priority than the others who are not 'wealthy' or 'powerful'. But, one must understand that such discrimination and prejudice is also a product of ignorance and egoism. If there's no 'vaccine' available, then nobody is going to be 'immunized' against the virus, regardless of someone is being wealthy and powerful, or not. Before vaccine is available, anyone can try one's best not to come in contact with the virus, if they want. That is universally non-discriminative.

Some people believe that if everyone is financially secured equally under good economy, then there will be no crime, corruption, racism or discrimination in the world. The history has been teaching us that even if everyone on earth is financially secured equally under good economy, there will still be crime, corruption, racism and discrimination coming from survival instinct and greed as well as prideful egoistic attachment and identification towards any particular social/ethnic/cultural/religious/spiritual/political thinking, belief, values and practice, deriving from ignorance.

One of the important role to curb the pandemic is to maintain strict social and physical distancing. This pandemic can also teach human beings, including mental health professionals, yoga enthusiasts and all those sympathetic/empathetic loving kindhearted people who believe that human beings will be sick and die if without any social and physical contact with other human beings, that actually human beings might be getting sick and die because of social and physical contact more than void of social and physical contact at this time being.

Those who feel offended by this realization learning from the pandemic are free to feel and react the way that they want. There's nothing wrong also if people refuse to maintain social and physical distancing due to their belief about human beings cannot live without social and physical contact with other human beings especially when the pandemic is still going strong in the world before the vaccine is available to everyone, which not only risking their own health but also all the others in the community, directly or indirectly.

It's true that some people are suffering mentally and emotionally due to social and physical distancing for a prolonged period of time, but it's not because of void of social and physical contact with other human beings, but it's due to the ignorant egoistic attachment, craving and clinging towards the social and physical contact with other human beings that is why the minds are in suffering mentally and emotionally if the social and physical contact is not available for some reasons. Some people who are void of attachment, craving and clinging towards social and physical contact with other human beings, who are also maintaining social and physical distancing with other human beings for a prolonged period of time, they don't suffer mentally or emotionally.

Those who practice yoga, especially those who teach yoga should have this very simple understanding, unfortunately, even some yoga teachers might not understand this and refuse to practice social and physical distancing, and they actively protest against 'the practice of social distancing' during this time being for the sake of curbing the pandemic.

None can remove the ignorance of others.

Another thing that yoga practitioners can learn from the prolonged pandemic, is the practical teaching and practice of - "Accepting the reality as it is, not necessarily is the way that we would like it to be; understanding that all and everything is impermanent and selfless, where life is not in the control of 'I' of how 'I' would like it to be; be equipped with the quality of patience, forbearance, tolerance, adjustment, adaptation and accommodation to be able to confront with any unforeseen challenges, regardless of success or failure; living in the present as it is, allowing life to be what it is, and it is constantly changing under the law of nature, cause and effect; appreciating everything without attachment, craving or aversion, and just do our best in what is possible at the present moment in life without attachment or expectation towards the fruit of our actions, and it's okay if certain things are not possible in the present moment; and it's okay if we choose to do nothing and let it be, just be in the moment," is much needed in situation like this. Where one doesn't really need to maintain 'positive thinking' and 'optimistic' anticipating that everything will be 'good' the way that we would like it to be. It's okay sometimes things are not okay. One doesn't need to get disappointed or frustrated when things are not being the way that one would like it to be. And there's nothing wrong if one feels disappointed and frustrated, but with understanding that even this disappointment and frustration is impermanent.

While different people have their own different ways of coping with this situation, that's their freedom.

Inquire the truth of everything.

'Equality' and 'non-discrimination'?

Many people think and believe that in order to achieve 'non-discrimination' in the society, everyone should be perceived/treated 'equally' in all aspects/fields regardless of everyone's different qualities of names and forms.

But 'non-discrimination' is really nothing to do with 'everyone is being perceived/treated equally regardless of different qualities of names and forms'.

'Non-discrimination' and 'equality' are two different things.

Inequality is the truth of all and everything that come in different qualities of names and forms. It's not a 'negative', or 'bad', or 'wrong' understanding/thinking. All the different qualities of names and forms are indeed being unequal or different from one another.

Worldly egoistic minds desire to be better or more superior than others, want to achieve a higher social status, to achieve higher results than others, or deserve to enjoy higher reward/salary/profit than others whom one thinks are less good/experience/qualification/efficient than oneself, or don't work/achieve as much as one does. And there's nothing wrong with some people earn more than many others doing the same kind of work, as some people are more efficient and productive than some others working at the same work in the same field, regardless of among the same or different gender/race/nationality/educational background, and etc.

It's impossible to have everything 'being equal to one another' as all and everything that come with their very own distinctive qualities of names and forms, different abilities and limitations, and there's nothing wrong or discriminating for being unequal or different to one another, or having different function, duty, responsibility, ability and disability, but, it's possible to be free from 'discrimination' among all the 'inequality' or 'differences' among the different qualities of names and forms.

Just like it's impossible to defy impermanent changes or death/the end of this life existence, but it's possible to go beyond impermanent changes and death/the end of this life existence, by accepting and respecting the law of impermanence and going beyond/transcending death/the end of this life existence, without attachment and identification towards the impermanent and selfless existence and function of the physical body and the mind perception of a worldly life existence, of all kinds of relationships/experiences/actions and the fruit of actions.

For example, many women want to be seen/perceived/treated as equally to men by trying to do things that men do, and vice versa, in order to fight against gender discrimination.

The truth is, there's nothing wrong or discriminating when women can't do certain things that men can do, or when men can't do certain things that women can do. It's perfectly okay when some people can do certain things that other people can't do, and vice versa, restricted by physical and/or mental limitation, regardless of whether among the same gender or among the different gender.

Non-discrimination is about accepting and respecting everyone as they are, regardless of everyone's different gender/genital organ, sexual orientation, appearance, nationality, family/educational background, race, culture, political view, social and financial status, physical and mental abilities and disabilities, thinking and belief, behavior, personality, intelligence, interests, talents, skills, livelihood/job/profession, values, practice and way of life, achievements and non-achievements, and so on.

Non-discrimination is there as it is, naturally, effortlessly, when the mind is free from ignorance and egoism, upon the realization of selflessness, where the mind is free from being conditioned or determined by all the different qualities of names and forms that are impermanent and selfless, including the condition, appearance, and the ability/disability of the physical body and the modification of the mind, and the realization of compassion, or the unconditional selfless loving kindness that exists in all and everything that supports/allows all and everything to be co-existing here in this space that doesn't belong to anyone.

There's nothing wrong for being unequal/different to one another.

Some people are more smart and intelligent while some are less smart and intelligent. Some are more hardworking while some are less hardworking. Some are more educated and highly experienced while some are less educated and less experienced. Some behave nastily while some behave nicely. Some are more loving and forgiving while some are less loving and forgiving. Some are more strong and flexible while some are less strong and flexible. Some are more patient and tolerant while some are less patient and tolerant. Some are more successful and have easier life condition while some are less successful and have harder life condition. Some are more healthy and active while some are less healthy and less active. Some are more sociable while some are less sociable. Some are more obedient while some are more rebellious. Some are fairer while some are darker. Some are taller/heavier while some are shorter/lighter. Some are more talented and skillful while some are less talented and less skillful. Some are more expressive while some are less expressive. Some are extrovert while some are introvert. Some are more aggressive while some are less aggressive. Some like the taste of sourness while some dislike the taste of sourness. Some like spicy food while some dislike spicy food. Some believe in spirituality and God while some disbelieve in spirituality and God, and so on.

Above all, what people want, is about having 'equal rights' to live and move freely in this world. That's what most people are fighting for, to have 'equal rights' regardless of all the different qualities of names and forms. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Above all, there is no need to have or fight for 'equal rights' if there is no 'any kind of discrimination' existing in this world that is run by ignorant egoistic human beings under a system that is based on the existence of 'legalization'/'criminalization'/'who deserve or don't deserve certain rights'/'approval'/'non-approval'/'recognition'/'non-recognition' and so on, that are created by human beings functioning under ignorance and egoism, that shouldn't be existing in the first place.

Human beings are being conditioned to live life in certain way to conform to certain standard/belief/values that is 'acceptable', 'sanctioned', and 'approved' under the regulation of such egoistic system created and run by ignorant egoistic human beings under the influence of impurities.

All these names and forms matter very much to those who don't know thyself, who haven't realize the truth of names and forms, or 'who/what I am', and whether wittingly or unwittingly, there's discrimination from oneself towards oneself and towards others due the attachment and identification towards certain qualities of names and forms that one likes and dislikes, agrees and disagrees with. There's always comparison, competition, judgment, criticism, and expectation towards oneself and others based on the particular standard of the quality of names and forms that one likes and dislikes, agrees and disagrees with. There's longing for receiving acknowledgement, acceptance, respect, agreement, approval, recognition, deserving treatment, cooperation, and support from others towards one's existence/identity/thinking/belief/actions/advocacy/ambition/desires. There's fighting against something that the mind think is 'bad', 'wrong', 'unfair', 'unacceptable', or 'undeserving'.

But the presence and absence of all the different qualities of names and forms, and the worldly national/political/social/religious/cultural game of 'equal rights' and 'non-equal rights', really doesn't matter to those who know thyself, who realized the truth of names and forms, of impermanence and selflessness, or who/what is this 'I'.

Oneself is free from judgment, expectation, and discrimination towards all the different qualities of names and forms, while allowing others who have judgment, expectation, and discrimination towards oneself and others to be what they are, but without being disturbed or determined by the judgment, expectation and discrimination from others, or not being given the 'equal rights' or 'deserving treatment' from the 'authority' or 'society' that is functioning under the veil of ignorance and egoism. One is not interested in attaining 'equal rights' or 'deserving treatment', as that is conforming to and empowering the 'game' of the ignorant and egoistic human beings. As whether everyone is being given 'equal rights' and 'deserving treatment', or not, it doesn't change the truth of impermanence and selflessness, and it doesn't guarantee/determine that all the minds will be free from ignorance and egoism and suffering, or not.

Be free.

Women doesn't need to compete with men, or with other women, and vice versa, to show that one can be as good as or better than the other. No one are equal to one another. None need to be having the same/similar/equal quality/ability/achievement like one another. No doubt that there will be higher and lower quality existing in all the different names and forms, which all are subject to impermanence and selflessness. Even the best or highest quality in the world will also change and pass away. It's okay if some people are 'better' than some others in certain things, and vice versa. There's also nothing wrong that in all kinds of competition, where somebody will standout, excel, and win, while the others didn't win. Somebody wins a competition because there are the others who don't standout/excel as much as the one who wins, that allows 'this person' to win, it doesn't mean that those who didn't win are 'bad', or 'not good', or 'not good enough'. Those who understand this will never feel bad or bitter when they didn't win in any competition.

Acknowledging, accepting, and respecting all the differences among each other. Each has their very own duty, responsibility, function, condition, limitation, ability and disability, while all and everyone/everything existing to be complementing and supporting one another.

Beyond all the different qualities of names and forms, it's selflessness, oneness, non-separateness, namelessness, formlessness, and attributelessness. There's neither 'discrimination' nor 'non-discrimination'. There's neither 'equal rights' nor 'non-equal rights'. There is no need to have 'non-discrimination' and 'equal rights', if 'discrimination' and 'unequal rights' don't exist in the first place.

In the end, everyone will realize that all are equal, anyway, under the nature's law of cause and effect, under the truth of selflessness and impermanence, where all and everything will change, decay, and pass away, regardless of all the different qualities of names and forms, having easy life or difficult life, what kind of achievements and non-achievements, and be given 'equal rights' to do and achieve what we want to do and achieve, or not. All and everyone and everything will pass away.

Being undetermined or undisturbed by the worldly ignorant egoistic game of 'unequal rights', 'prejudice', 'oppression', and 'discrimination', doesn't mean that one is supporting those names and forms, or one should be standing there to receive ignorant treatments of 'unequal rights', 'prejudice', 'oppression', and 'discrimination' deriving from the ignorant egoistic human minds. One can choose to move away from such society, without the thinking of "I have the rights to be here. Why should I move away?" or "They should change. There shouldn't be such unequal rights, prejudice, oppression, and discrimination in the world." As no one can change another, not even by sacrificing oneself would remove the ignorance from the others, or from the world.

All the past saints and sages renounced the world, staying away from the society that was, and will always be occupied by minds functioning under the influence of ignorance and egoism, as much as possible, not wasting any effort and energy into dealing with the ignorance and the consequences of ignorance in the worldly egoistic society. Even after Buddha or Guru attained enlightenment and they came back to the society to disseminate the teachings and practice towards attaining Self-realization to free the mind from ignorance, they didn't and couldn't change the people, or remove the ignorance from the minds or from the world. It has to come from the mind itself to be aware of ignorance and be initiated/disciplined to work diligently by oneself alone to free one's mind from ignorance.

All kinds of goodness will pass away.

All kinds of badness/evilness also will pass away.

Inquire the truth of everything.

How to see the truth of everything as it is and be free

People grieve and cry for the death of someone or something that they think and believe as good and right, that they love very much, that they think it doesn't deserve to die. People feel glad and cheer for the death of someone or something that they think and believe as bad and wrong, that they hate very much, that they think it deserves to die.

Death is neither good nor bad, neither positive nor negative, neither happiness nor suffering, neither right nor wrong. It's all about what we like and don't like. When we feel grief and cry for 'death' is because we are losing something that we like. When we feel glad and cheer for 'death' is because we are getting rid of something that we don't like.

Whenever we feel angry, upset, disturbed, hurt, sad or disagree about something, it's not because people or things are being 'bad', 'wrong', 'negative', or 'suffering'. It's because we come in contact with something that we disagree with based on our thinking and belief of what is right and wrong, good and bad, or we are not getting what we like and want, we are losing what we like and want, and we are getting what we don't like and don't want.

People mourn for the death of those whom they love, that matter to them (people or animals or insects), and don't mourn for the death of those whom they have no likes or dislikes, that don't matter to them, and cheer for the death of those whom they hate and disagree with.

And hence, this allows us to understand that 'death' is neither good nor bad, neither happiness nor suffering, neither right nor wrong, neither positive nor negative. It's all subjective reactions influenced by attachment towards the likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements, based on a particular personal thinking and belief.

It's the desire of craving and aversion that generates unhappiness, disturb, hurts, resentment, painful sorrow and suffering in the mind. It is ignorance that causes the mind to think and believe that unhappiness, disturb, hurts, resentment, painful sorrow and suffering are caused by something bad, wrong, horrible, inhumane, negative or suffering.

Perform this inquiry into everything that our minds perceive and judge as good and bad, positive and negative, right and wrong, happiness and suffering.

Everything is just what it is. People are just being what they are. Things are just what they are. The world is just what it is.

There's no clinging, craving, aversion, discrimination, hatred, fear, painful sorrow, or suffering.

There's no good death or bad death. Everything is just arising and passing away.

If one doesn't know this, one doesn't know what is compassion, even though one identifies oneself as a compassionate being, and tries to be compassionate or practice compassion or perform compassionate actions.

Allow the mind to be open and see things as they are, uninfluenced by the conditioned/limited/subjective personal thinking and belief, egoism of attachment, identification, desire of craving and aversion, judgment and expectation, and ceaseless autonomous reactions of impurities.

If people don't like or don't agree with this, that's their freedom of thinking, belief, actions and reactions.

Be free.

Yoga, in a simple way

If our mind can be in peace and remain equanimous, under any conditions and situations, especially when we lost what we like and want, or when we don't get what we like and want, or when we are getting what we don't like and don't want, and we are still be able to be kind and compassionate towards ourselves and other beings without discrimination towards different qualities of names and forms, including those whom we think are 'bad' and 'wrong', or those who are unkind to us whether intentionally or unintentionally, is yoga.

Right discrimination and non-discrimination in yoga

In the teachings of yoga, we would come in contact with the term 'right discrimination' and 'non-discrimination'. Sometimes, the yoga teacher says - Develop 'discrimination' towards the real and unreal, and some other times the yoga teacher says - Be free from 'discrimination' towards all the different qualities of names and forms. Some people might get confused.

Non-discrimination actually derives from right discrimination.

Right discrimination is the ability to inquire, to reason, to reflect upon the truth of names and forms. That all and everything is impermanent and selfless, or 'I'-less.

Non-discrimination is present upon the realization of selflessness and seeing the one same nature in all and everything beyond all the impermanent different qualities of names and forms, the mind is free from subjective discrimination towards all and everything based on personal likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements, wants and don't wants under the influence of certain conditional thinking and belief.

Without right discrimination, one sees all the different qualities in the different names and forms, and generates subjective discrimination towards all and everything based on personal likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements, wants and don't wants under the influence of certain conditional thinking and belief.

Without right discrimination and non-discrimination, one will always be restless or peaceless, as the mind will always be affected, disturbed and determined by the personal likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements, desire of craving and aversion of the mind upon coming in contact with the objects of the senses, even if one identifies oneself as a yogi, or yoga practitioner, or yoga teacher, who has been practicing yoga and meditation regularly for a long time.

Discrimination based on qualities that we like and dislike, agree and disagree with...

While we often complain about others for being discriminative or racist, but how many of us will show special liking and interest towards people who seem to be 'nice' and 'smart', who treat us the way that we like them to treat us, who have 'pretty' face and 'well-shaped' body figure, and we will treat them differently from those who seem to be 'not very nice' and 'not very smart', who don't treat us the way that we like them to treat us, who don't have 'pretty' face or 'well-shaped' body figure?

As this is also being discriminative.

Friendliness and making friends are two different things...

Being friendly to all beings is not the same as when we want to be friend with certain people whom we like and agree with, and expect some sort of friendship, accompany and social interaction in return.

A person who is an introvert, who doesn't talk much and doesn't appear to be warm nor sociable, but it's not necessarily unfriendly. Not having many friends to hang out with doesn't necessarily means that we are unfriendly beings. We might be free from negative thinking and judgment about ourselves and other people, and have no ill-thinking and ill-will towards ourselves and others.

A person can be an extrovert, who might be talkative and appear to be very warm and sociable, but it's not necessarily friendly. Having many friends to hang out with doesn't necessarily means that we are friendly beings. We might have lots of negative thinking and judgment about ourselves and other people, and have ill-thinking and ill-will towards ourselves and others.

In a casual conversation among people whether it's with somebody whom we recognize as friend or acquaintance, what we talk about usually are mostly about the past, the future, third party, judgment, comparison, expectation, likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements, as well as using mocking, teasing, criticism, slandering, back-biting about someone else as an entertaining subject to talk about and laugh about. One common thing that happens naturally in human social conversation is we like to say nice things in front of other people, but then we will mock, tease and criticize about them behind their back. All these interactive conversations are actually move our mind away from the present moment, and are empowering ignorance, impurities and egoism.

One of our yoga practice is talk less, and strictly refrain from any interactive conversations that involve slandering, back-biting, condemn, mocking, teasing, flirting, lies telling, exaggeration, boasting, manipulation, conflict, discrimination, hatred and any kinds of speech that will generate or promote disharmony in ourselves and in others.

This is part of the yoga practice of eliminating the ego, pride and arrogance by filtering, restricting and controlling our thinking, actions and speech. This is the practice of silence (Mauna) which is very important in our yoga and meditation practice.

We can appear to be very 'friendly', make friendship with many people and have many social interactive friends, but it is not necessarily that we are free from ill-will, jealousy, ill-thinking, criticism, slandering, back-biting, and discrimination towards all these 'friends'. Not to say when we come in contact with the people whom we dislike and disagree with, we might criticize, or condemn, or might say and do things that will hurt the reputation and feelings of these people whom we dislike and disagree with.

This type of egoistic friendliness is conditional. We can only be friendly to those whom we like and agree with, but not to those whom we dislike and disagree with.

Cultivate universal friendliness is part our yoga practice.

This type of friendliness is free from ill-will, jealousy, ill-thinking, criticism, slandering, back-biting or discrimination of likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements towards all beings. There's no 'special' treatment towards certain people, whether they are our 'friends' whom we like or they are not our 'friends' whom we dislike.

Universal friendliness is being kind towards all and everyone without discrimination nor judgment, without superiority nor inferiority, without selfish desires nor expectation, without influenced by the likes and dislikes, agreements and disagreements coming from our egoistic mind.

As long as we are still not free from discrimination, have ill-will, anger and hatred towards certain people and things that our mind dislikes and disagrees with, we are not really friendly even if we have many social friends in life.

Be truly friendly to all without discrimination.

Be happy.

Reflection at the waterfall on loving kindness...

On the way walking back from the waterfall to the car park, an old Malay man asked us, "Is the waterfall very far away?"

We told him it's only less than 5 minutes walk and it's easy to walk there.

And when he started walking towards the waterfall, we heard someone calling, "Pakcik (Uncle)!.... Pakcik (Uncle)!"

We then saw a Malaysian Chinese man who was working for the renovation project at the waterfall was calling for the uncle.

Assumed that he must have something to say to the uncle, I helped him to call the uncle also, but seemed like the uncle didn't hear us and kept walking away.

The Malaysian Chinese man spoke to me in Chinese, "The uncle's family had went up to the top of the waterfall and I heard the family told the uncle to wait for them here. He is old and alone. He shouldn't go anywhere. I worry if something happen to him and no body is with him."

I said to him, "Maybe you can go and check him out in 10-15 minutes time later to make sure he is alright."

He said, "But I will be going back soon."

I said to him, "为人为到底,送佛送到西, (It means that when we show concern and kindness to other people, we have to complete doing what we have started), please go and check him out before you go back to make sure he is alright."

He then laughed, and said, "Okay. I will go to check him out before I leave."

A small story, but it was very touching, as this Malaysian Chinese man doesn't know this old Malay man. The old Malay man's family left him alone there, and the family didn't ask this Malaysian Chinese man to watch out for this old man. He has no obligation to look after this old man. But just because he overheard their conversation and out of concern for the old man's safety, he showed concern and care for him.

And most important, there's no difference about race or people whom we know or not. We show concern and care to anyone disregard we know them or not, and without any obligation.

Marc laughed out loud after I explained to him about our conversation. He said it's funny for me to tell people, if we want to be good, we have to complete the good actions that we have started. And that man actually listened to what I said to him.

Om shanti.

Reflection from observing beetles...

There were many big and small beetles in our home especially during rainy season. Very often I found them dead in a large quantity in a specific place in the house.

One thing that makes me reflect about these beetles is, how come they could not come back up on their feet by themselves after they turn upside down. And they are often being upside down. Some of them eventually died out of hunger and thirst, I guess, or attacked and eaten by other insects, if they couldn't turn around by themselves for a long time.

Whenever I saw them lying on the floor on their back struggling to turn around to come back up on their feet, but they couldn't do it by themselves, I would give them a little help.

I wonder why they are being designed in such way that they couldn't come back up by their own effort, until somebody come to help or rescue them, or maybe a breeze that is strong enough to give them a blow to turn them around, or maybe a leaf fell on them and they could grab on to the leaf to get back on their feet. Or else there were many times when I saw them on the floor, they were already being attacked and eaten by other insects, mainly ants. This allows me to reflect on the truth about everything is impermanent. Everything will come to an end in its natural cause.

I think one thing is for sure, these beetles are here for us to know about compassion and to practice compassion (at least for me, it is). Without any discrimination whether they are friendly or unfriendly insects (I think some people might be afraid of them, or being disturbed by them especially when they appear in a large quantity in the house), without prejudice or expectation, just help them to get back on their feet, and without expectation that they will be grateful and say "thank you", or will give us anything in return. There is no language communication. There is no selfish desires. Merely give help to them just because we can. It's not because they are our friends, nor they are very nice to us, nor they will bring us some benefits. Even though sometimes their thorny feet might sting us when we try to pick them up. Just give help, and let go (non-attachment).

This is just my little reflection from observing them.

Om shanti.
