Inquire towards positive thinking as in the teachings of yoga

If everything is just what it is, neither positive nor negative, then why is there about positive thinking in the teachings of yoga, especially in the lineage of Swami Sivananda?

There are two elements in the positive thinking under the teachings of yoga in the lineage of Swami Sivananda.

The first one -

The minds that are thinking in certain way that lean towards negativity even before trying to do something, such as "I can't ...," or "I won't be able to ...," then they need to change and overcome such mentality, by thinking, "I will try my best, and see what happens," without egoism. And after they have tried their best to do something without attachment, identification, craving or aversion, comparison, judgment or expectation towards the action and the fruit of action, they learn how to accept the fruit of action as it is, either "It's possible," or "It's not possible," and there's nothing wrong and it's okay, if after trying to do something, but it's not possible to do it in the present moment. While there's no pride and arrogance if it's possible of doing something with great success.

The second one -

Positive thinking is not about 'thinking positively' as what many minds would be interpreting or understanding towards 'positive thinking'.

It's not at all about "I am positive," "I am strong," "I am good enough," "I am superhuman," "I can ...," or "I will be able to ..." in order to make the mind feels good and confident about itself by motivating the mind to be performing certain actions to achieve certain accomplishment in its momentary life existence.

It's about having a healthy mental health of clarity thinking and peace of mind, by developing and having correct understanding towards the truth of selflessness and impermanence, what is the mind or the modification of the mind, how the mind works, what is going on in the modification of the mind, what is the mind behavior pattern, what is action and reaction, what is cause and effect, what is action and consequences of action, what is suffering or unhappiness, what is ignorance, what is the ego, what is egoism, what is impurity, what is restlessness, what is the root cause of suffering or unhappiness, how to be free from suffering or unhappiness, and what is the 'I' that the thinking mind thinks and believes and identifies as itself (the self-inquiry towards Who am I?), and etc, under the purified intellectual reasoning power that is reasoning everything as it is, without being influenced by any particular worldly passionate egoistic ideas, belief, values and practice.

It's about the understanding or the capability of accepting and respecting the selfless impermanent body and mind, life and the world being what it is, as it is, without egoism of attachment, identification, desire of craving and aversion, comparison, judgment and expectation. And hence, the mind is void of the suffering deriving from perceiving the ceaseless impermanent changes in all and everything in this selfless impermanent worldly life existence, that are not necessary pleasant, agreeable and desirable.

By thinking positively and being motivated to perform many kinds of actions achieving many accomplishment in life doesn't necessarily mean that the mind is or will be having correct understanding and unconditional peace, not being determined by all kinds of experiences or names and forms, being free from all kinds of suffering or unhappiness deriving from the idea of 'I', ignorance, egoism, impurities and restlessness, or being free from generating hurtful damaging behaviors, actions and reactions that hurt oneself and others and the surrounding environment.

And it's definitely not about having positive mind power to be changing and making everything to become all positive and nothing negative in the world.

Rejecting subjugation and yearning for freedom is basic instinct in all living beings

Yearning towards all kinds of freedom and rejection towards any kind of subjugation being imposed onto oneself is part of the basic instinct in all living beings.

All living beings want total or maximum freedom for themselves, however, there are also human beings that don't mind imposing subjugation or restriction onto other beings that they disagree with or dislike, either by themselves or by others. These minds want all kinds of freedom for themselves, but they disagree with or being dissatisfied with some others having their own freedom.

In the teachings and practice of yoga and buddhism, one doesn't impose subjugation or restriction onto any others, but, only through one's own freewill, one imposes subjugation or restriction onto oneself, to discipline oneself, to have self-control, in order to annihilate ignorance, egoism and impurities in oneself, to attain the highest freedom of existence, which is free from the inevitable restless suffering of names and forms that is subject to selflessness and impermanence, of a perceived worldly life existence deriving from the modification of the mind functioning under the influence of ignorance and egoism.

Coming from the conscience of this mind itself, yearning to free itself from ignorance and the consequences of ignorance, so that the existence of this body and mind, its thoughts, actions and speech wouldn't cause any painful suffering onto the others in the surrounding environment.

Many people would think and believe that 'democracy' or 'power to the people' is 'freedom from being ruled by others', or what people think and believe which will give them 'the power' that gives them 'the freedom' that they desire, where people have the power to choose and elect a group of people that represent them to form an authorization that will 'serve' them and 'give' them what they want, the way that they desire. But, 'democracy' is only 'sort of power and freedom' to a group of people who make up the majority, and not to the other groups of people who aren't the majority, because not everyone has the same interests and desires towards a world run by a particular system that they prefer and don't prefer. Meanwhile, 'the majority' with the similar interests and desires are not necessarily those who are free from the influence of ignorance, egoism, greed, possessiveness and selfishness, as well as those whom 'the majority' chosen and elected to represent them and form the authorization to serve the people, also might not necessarily be free from the influence of ignorance, egoism, greed, possessiveness and selfishness.

A 'system' that is generated and run by a group of corrupted minds that are functioning under the influence of ignorance, egoism, greed, possessiveness and selfishness would be hurting many innocent common people who just want to live a simple honest life, and hurting the surrounding living environment more than to be 'protecting' the benefits and welfare of the people indiscriminately, or to be 'looking after' the welfare of the surrounding living environment.

That's why the teachings and practice of yoga and buddhism emphasized on the attainment of self-realization through self-conscience, self-freewill, self-effort, self-discipline, self-control, self-purification and self-inquiry to free one's mind from ignorance and the by-products of ignorance, allowing a world that is self regulating under the law of nature, where all beings are self-initiated to free oneself from the influence of ignorance and the by-products of ignorance, where all beings don't need to be regulated under a humans generated 'system' to be or not to be in certain way, or 'be so called protected' under the 'system', where liberation from ignorance and egoism in the beings will efficiently contribute to peace and harmony among all beings in the world of diversities. Then, either with or without a 'humans generated system' in the world, it's neither good nor bad, if the world (the people and the authority that serves the people) is free from ignorance and the by-products of ignorance.

Liberation from ignorance and egoism can never be achieved by the discrimination, regulation, oppression, disciplinary, control, and threat imposed by others, or by receiving so called 'blessing' from 'someone or somewhere', but only through self-initiation and persevered self-effort to discipline, purify and silent one's mind.

It's never about out of self-righteousness based on a particular thinking, belief, practice, values, interests and desires to teach, judge, oppress, control, discipline, change, prosecute, and punish the others that are different from oneself, that one disagrees with and dislikes.

It's not about achieving a world that is preferable to a particular group of people of a particular thinking, belief, practice, values, interests and desires, by running the world under a particular humans generated 'system of law and order' to regulate all and everyone to be and not to be in certain way according to a particular thinking, belief, practice, values, interests and desires.

Under the so called 'democratic system regulated under specific law and order' to be regulating and controlling the people in the world to be and not to be in certain way, some really good leaders with good intentions and great ideas that would benefit the overall welfare of the world also can't do much to free the world from ignorance and the consequences of ignorance, due to being 'restricted' by the 'system of democracy' itself. It's not that 'democracy' is not good, it's just that real freedom for all and everyone without discrimination doesn't come from 'democracy'.

Above all, 'positive thinking' and 'optimism' also couldn't remove the ignorance and the consequences of ignorance in the world.

Positive thinking vs dispassion and non-attachment

Positive thinking might be able to make the mind feels a little bit better momentarily, but it's not the end of practice, as it doesn't really help the mind to transcend ignorance and be free from suffering, as the mind is still being determined by the qualities of names and forms, where there's craving/clinging/grasping towards the quality of names and forms that is likable, agreeable, pleasing and desirable for the mind, and there's aversion towards the quality of names and forms that is dislikable, disagreeable, unpleasing and undesirable for the mind. There's intentional egoistic tendency of changing something that the mind doesn't like into something else that is less dislikable for the mind, as the mind is being affected/determined/disturbed/influenced by the quality of names and forms that the mind perceives through the senses. This mind is not free, even though by thinking positively might give momentary relief to the mind from continuously drowning in negative thinking.

While dispassion and non-attachment would allow the mind to transcend ignorance and be free from suffering, being aware of the mind perception of different qualities of names and forms regardless of what the worldly minded perceived or recognized as good/bad/positive/negative quality of names and forms, but without being affected/determined/disturbed/influenced by any quality of names and forms, going beyond all the pleasant/unpleasant and desirable/undesirable or good/bad and positive/negative qualities of names and forms that the mind perceives through the senses of a worldly life existence.

By telling worldly egoistic passionate people to think positive in the midst of pandemic, lockdown, political tension, economy downturn, discrimination, fear, hatred, violence, unjust, corruption, worry and uncertainty, would most probably inflict further disappointment and frustration in the passionate egoistic minds that are being affected/determined/disturbed/influenced very much by the quality of names and forms or the unpleasant/undesirable condition and situation in the world. Such as "Things will get better for sure." or "Everything will be fine in the end. Don't worry." or "We are good people. God will take care of us. Nothing bad is going to happen to good people like us."

In yoga or Buddhism, it's okay even if everything is not going to be fine in the end, and regardless of whether one thinks and believes oneself is a good person or not, whether one believes or disbelieves in God, it still doesn't change the truth of impermanence and selflessness.

While the practice of dispassion and non-attachment is about seeing the truth of things as it is, even if it's something really bad and terrible for the worldly egoistic passionate minds, without intentionally denying, or pushing away, or trying to change the unpleasant/undesirable condition or situation of the world, although one can perform kind and beneficial compassionate actions for oneself and/or others in the world selflessly at anytime and anywhere, but without expecting everything will be good and nothing bad, or expecting more good and less bad, knowing clearly that all is impermanent and selfless, without attaching onto the impermanent and selfless function of the body and mind or the perception of a worldly life existence of all kinds relationships and experiences that is being conditioned by actions and the consequences of actions, and hence, the mind is not being affected/determined/disturbed/influenced by it, remain equanimous and at peace as it is, even when disaster and death is approaching. This mind is free as it is, it doesn't need to think positive at all, to be hopeful, wishing everything will be positive and good the way that the mind would like it to be.

It's okay and there's nothing wrong to react and feel negative, depressed, sad, angry, dissatisfied or disappointed towards the worldly condition and situation that the mind perceives and recognizes as unpleasant/undesirable/bad/negative, allowing the mind to react and feel as it is, but the mind knows clearly that even this feeling is impermanent and selfless, it's not 'I'. Need not be influenced or over-powered by this feeling to perform more actions that would most probably bring further unpleasant/undesirable consequences of actions.

Positive thinking is like leadership or having a leader, regardless of good or bad leader, who is being given the responsibility or power by a group of people (or the majority of the people under the system of democracy) to lead them, where these people need a leader to decide for them what to think and what to do, and be responsible for all the actions and the consequences of actions, as they are unable to think and act independently and incapable to take responsibility for performing action and the consequences of their action fearlessly. But, that is not a solution to all the problems in the world. Or else, the world would already be free from all kinds of problems since long time ago when leaders started to be existing in the world to lead a community or nation, if by having leader to lead a community is the way to a better world.

A really efficient community of the world doesn't need any leader at all, not even a good leader, as everyone can think and act independently, wisely and responsibly, being free from ignorance, petite mindedness, separateness, discrimination and fear.

The teaching and practice of yoga doesn't propagate leadership, or to create and train good/magnificent leaders that lead a group of followers who are dependent on the leader to give them a set of rules and regulations on what or how to think and act, or to live life and behave. It emphasizes on training/practice that would allow each and everyone to be able to be thinking and acting independently, wisely and responsibly, where none needs any leader or a set of rules and regulations to tell them what to think and act, or how to live life and behave, being free from ignorance, petite mindedness, separateness, discrimination and fear, by realizing selflessness, oneness, namelessness, formlessness, attributelessness.

Somehow, most of the worldly education/cultural/social/political system emphasized on producing great leaders to lead a bunch of followers to create a world that they think how it should be. While a very rare good and wise leader might bring some goodness to its community, but for how long this good leader can serve the community? What happen when this good leader is gone? Unless this good leader abandons leadership and transforms into a great teacher that would teach and train all and everyone to be independent, wise and responsible.

A truly great teacher never try to be a leader who leads a group of followers of a community and receives the power to hoard/guard/guide/protect that particular community. He or she will teach and allow all and everyone to become independent and wise, and be responsible for their own action and the consequences of action, to be free from ignorance and egoism, to be free from suffering and the cause of suffering.

Some would argue that there are too many people who are under the influence of ignorance, and hence, there is an inevitable need to have wise leaders to lead the huge amount of ignorant people. Just like many people emphasize on the importance of cultural/religious/community dependence and support, where many people believe that people would be lost and can't live without depending on a particular culture/religion/community support. There's nothing wrong with that, but even the enlightened Siddhartha Gautama Buddha never intended to be a wise leader leading a group of ignorant followers (as that would be so exhausting, going everywhere to help to solve everyone's never ending problems due to ignorance.) He taught all and everyone about how to be free from ignorance and be independent, even though not all and everyone would attain success. Just like an ignorant leader can't do anything to influence a group of wise people, a wise leader also can't do anything to influence or change a group of ignorant people, not to say to take away or remove other's ignorance. It has to come from each and everyone to be aware of ignorance and be self-initiated to be free from ignorance.

When someone fell and got hurt, a Buddha, or a great teacher, doesn't go and comfort this person, "Oh no! Poor you. Such a bad thing happened to you. You don't deserve this. But hey, I'm here for you. I will heal you and make you feel better." Instead, they suggest, "If you want, you can see the truth from this experience. Falling and wounded is neither good nor bad, neither positive nor negative. Look into the action and the consequence of action. You fell, and there's a wound, and there's painful sensation. And look at the impermanence and selflessness of it, regardless of whether you like it, or not." and "Whether you think and feel it's okay or it's not okay, of how you react towards this experience, it's your own responsibility. It's nothing to do with what you think and believe as right or wrong, or who's responsible for the fall and the wound." And this is true compassion, but most people would prefer the first version than the later one.

One can be living closely with a wise man for many many years, obeying and following the guidance/discipline of the wise man about how to think and act, live life and behave, but oneself never investigate the truth and is being comfortable with somebody else being there to tell oneself what to think and act, or not, but still one is not free from ignorance, where one doesn't know what to think and act, how to live life and behave independently once there's no more guidance/discipline from the wise man, unless one realizes ignorance in oneself, investigates the truth of everything, realizing the truth of things and eliminating ignorance through one's own effort, and becomes independent.

Positive thinking is not freedom

Just as drugs or medicines are useless to those who are free from physical or mental illness, positive thinking is irrelevant to the mind that is free from ignorance and egoism.

Positive thinking is one of the yoga practice to counter negative thinking, but it's not the goal of the yoga practice, as if the mind needs to be thinking in the positive way, to be positive and stay positive, it means that the mind is still not free from being determined by the mind perception of duality under the influence of ignorance.

The mind that is free, perceives all the names and forms as they are, or sees things as they are. Everything is just what it is, neither good nor bad, neither positive nor negative. This mind doesn't need to think positively. It doesn't need to practice positive thinking to counter negative thinking as there is no negative thinking. All forms of yoga practice exist as different tools for the ignorant egoistic mind to be free from ignorance and egoism. Any form of yoga practice is useless to the mind that is free from ignorance.

The mind is not free, is due to it is still perceiving all the names and forms under the influence of ignorance and egoism perceiving duality of good and bad, positive and negative, and the mind is being determined by duality, where there's craving/clinging towards the mind perception of the quality of good and positive, and aversion towards the mind perception of the quality of bad and negative, then this mind can practice positive thinking or correct understanding to counter so called negative thinking, or more precisely, ignorant egoistic thinking or corrupted understanding in the mind.

It's like drugs or medicines to counter certain physical or mental illness, positive thinking is just a tool to counter negative/ignorant thinking. It's not freedom if one needs to depend on drugs or medicines all the time, similarly it's not freedom if the mind needs to rely on positive thinking as the mind is still not free from the influence of ignorance and egoism.

Be free.

Be free from all kinds of craving and clinging

Though this is the very basic teaching and practice of yoga, many people are not free from certain forms of physical, mental and emotional craving and clinging, both gross (aware) and subtle (unaware). It's a practice that seems to be challenging or struggling for many yoga practitioners, including 'yoga teachers', mostly those who are passionate towards worldly life existence of an individual being with a personal identity and most probably at least one or a few group/community identity under the influence of worldly cultural and social ideas, activities, thinking and beliefs.

The minds that are not free from attachment and identification with some kind of impermanent qualities of names and forms as 'I', are not free from being determined by the presence/possession and absence/non-possession of certain qualities of names and forms to feel good, happy, confident and meaningful, or not.

There's craving towards certain qualities of names and forms that the impure mind perceives or recognizes as 'good', 'positive', 'well-deserving', 'acknowledgement', 'payback to one's effort', 'higher standard', 'prideful', 'successful', 'lovable', 'joyful' and 'meaningful', and there's aversion towards certain qualities of names and forms that the impure mind perceives or recognizes as 'bad', 'negative', 'undeserving', 'non-acknowledgement', 'non-payback to one's effort', 'lower standard', 'shameful', 'failure', 'unlovable', 'sorrowful' and 'meaningless'.

This is how most worldly minds think, believe, behave, live life, interact with one another, act and react, as most people/human beings grew up being taught/influenced by their parents, teachers, society and medias to develop a strong sense of 'self-identity' and 'group identity' attaching onto certain qualities of names and forms to be who they are, or who 'I' am. The entire life existence is very much based on upholding, or attaining, or possessing, or protecting, or passing down certain 'values' to feel happy, confident and meaningful, to live a proud, purposeful and meaningful life. Such as there's nothing wrong when most minds would feel, think and believe that "It's so good to practice yoga and it's so meaningful to teach yoga to other people." but the minds are not free.

It's not easy for the minds to just 'let go' or 'abandon' all these identities of certain qualities that 'generate' the sense of 'existence' or more so the sense of 'meaningful existence', which is truly unnecessary to the liberated minds, but is upmost essential to the worldly impure minds.

There is the need of 'aspiration', 'intention', 'motivation', 'inspiration', 'reward', 'encouragement', 'praise and compliment', 'recognition', 'acknowledgement', 'positive feedback', 'positive interaction', 'positive guidance', and etc, for performing actions (of doing something that the mind perceives as 'good') or inactions (of not doing something that the mind perceives as 'not good').

As long as the mind is not free from this 'worldly habitual thinking pattern' under the influence of worldly thinking and belief where most people think and believe that there is a need of the existence of 'positive beings' to uplift/inspire 'the other not so positive beings' to 'create' a 'positive world', or there is a need of 'spiritual beings with spiritual healing power' or 'magic pills' to 'heal' all the 'hurts' or 'take away' all the painful sorrow and suffering of mankind, this mind will always be determined by the qualities of names and forms that are impermanent and selfless, and be disturbed by the absence and presence of what the worldly minds perceive as 'good and bad', 'right and wrong', 'positive and negative', 'appropriateness and inappropriateness', 'should and shouldn't', 'auspiciousness and inauspiciousness' and 'meaningfulness and meaninglessness'.

The mind expects itself and everything that it identifies as 'I', such as 'my body', 'my appearance', 'my ability', 'my mind', 'my belief', 'my feelings', 'my knowledge', 'my happiness', 'my confidence', 'my life', or 'my existence' to be in certain ways that the mind desires, likes and agrees with, of the qualities that it craves to achieve, or possess, or identify with. The mind also expects others and everything that it relates to 'I', such as 'my family', 'my relationship', 'my friends', 'my country', 'my community', 'my group', 'my world', 'my fellow human beings', and so on, to be in certain ways that the mind desires, likes and agrees with. When things are not the way that the mind expects it to be, the mind feels disturbed, dissatisfied, disappointed, and either agitated or depressed.

Those who truly 'help' other beings to be free from ignorance the cause of suffering, they 'guide' the minds to become their own teacher, to be aware of what is going on in the mind, to inquire the truth of everything, and to attain self-realization, to be free from ignorance and the by-products of ignorance - egoism and impurities empowered by worldly ideas, activities, thinking and beliefs.

Contemplate on "Positive thinking is a just a practice to counter negative thinking, but it's not the goal of the yoga practice." and "There's nothing wrong with attaining good health and happy mind, but it's not the goal of the yoga practice." and go beyond positive thinking, good health and happy mind.

Realize this, "It's okay when the mind is 'negative or unhappy' in the present moment, as even this state of 'negativity or unhappiness' is impermanent and will change. Without any intention or expectation to chase away the state of 'negativity or unhappiness' or to develop the state of 'positivity and happiness', without craving towards 'positivity/happiness' or aversion towards 'negativity/unhappiness', allowing the mind to be what it is, allow it to change as it is. The mind is just what it is. It is impermanent. It's neither a positive nor negative mind, neither a happy nor unhappy mind. And it's not 'I'."

Love and be kind to the mind as it is, even when it is negative or unhappy. This doesn't mean that pampering the mind by gratifying all its desires, but be determined to free the mind from ignorance, impurities, egoism and suffering.

As long as there is an identity in the mind generates clinging/craving towards 'positivity' and aversion towards 'negativity', to change the mind to be the way that 'I' want it to be, the way that 'I' think it should be, the mind is not free, even though there's nothing wrong with that. Instead of working on transforming a 'negative mind' into a 'positive mind', work on 'being aware of what is going on in the mind, without attachment of craving and aversion towards all the 'positive and negative', 'good and bad', or 'happy and unhappy' thought activities as 'I'. The mind doesn't need to be 'positive', or 'good', or 'happy' when it is free from ignorance.

Practice yoga, without attachment, identification, craving, aversion and expectation, allowing the effects or the fruit of the practice to be there as it is. There's no "I am doing the yoga practice and I will be receiving the effects or the fruit of the yoga practice." The one who is free, or not free from ignorance, disturbs and suffering, it's the mind. There's no 'I' expects the mind will be free. The mind will be free as it is, when the idea of 'I' disappears.

Be free.

Be free from the belief of 'positive mind power' to 'change' the world

There's nothing wrong with 'positive' minds strongly believe in 'positive thinking' or 'positive mind power' to change the perceived reality that they don't like to be something that they prefer, and wish for 'positive qualities in the world' to 'change' or 'make' the world to be (more) good, peaceful and harmony, or even better, if the world can be all good, peaceful and harmony, and nothing bad and evil.

It's better to have 'positive' good and kind thoughts than 'negative' bad and evil thoughts, in one's mind. And most 'positive' minds have intention/aspiration of 'wishful thinking' to be 'changing' the world via 'positive mind power'.

It's just not the objective of yoga and meditation practice.

No doubt that 'positive thinking' in one's mind can motivate oneself to perform actions that 'might' benefit oneself and the world in certain ways, but developing 'positive mind power' with the intention/wish/desire to change the world to be the way that the mind would like it to be, is not part of the yoga and meditation practice. If one's mind is free from ignorance and impurities, it would definitely help the world to have less an ignorant and impure being, but it doesn't take away or eliminate ignorance and impurities from other beings in the world.

The 'positive thinking' in yoga practice is to allow the mind to counter 'negative thinking' and to 'cheerfully' deal with challenging difficult condition and situation that is not necessarily the way that the mind would like it to be, to be persevered in one's yoga and meditation practice on the path towards self-realization and liberation from ignorance and suffering. It's not about to develop 'positive super mind power' to 'wish' and 'change' the world to be something that it is not, or 'wish' and 'change' other beings to be someone whom they are not.

The space is still what it is, whether people think it is too small and wish that it is bigger, or people think that it is too big and wish that it is smaller.

The sun is still what it is, whether people think it is not the way that it should be and wish that the sun to be something else that it is not.

The world is still what it is, whether people think that it has too much bad and wish that it has less bad and more good, or people think that it has too much good and wish that it has less good and more bad.

The world will still be full of ignorant and selfish and impure beings with ignorant thinking, belief and behavior, and the consequences of ignorance, no matter how many 'positive and kind' people try to collect 'positive mind power' with positive intention/hope/wish for 'world peace' or 'a world free from ignorance'. Wars/riots/conflicts/discrimination/unjust/violence/greed were/are/will be still going on here and there, among different countries or communities or families or species or tribes or genders, and within a country or community or family or tribe or specie or gender, due to ignorance, egoism and impurities in all the minds.

People think and believe, "I am inspired by Buddha." But Buddha didn't intent to 'inspire' anyone. There are many weren't inspired by Buddha. But Buddha didn't intent to 'not inspire' anyone.

The real practice of yoga and meditation is to silent this restless mind, that is here, functioning and perceiving all the good and bad qualities of names and forms. All the other aspirations and inspirations are merely the play of ignorance/egoism, or Maya. Yoga and meditation practice is not about developing or attaining 'positive thinking super mind power' to be 'wishing' or 'changing' the 'worldly life existence' or 'the world of human beings existence' to be the way that 'I' think it should be - All good and nothing bad, or the world should be a place of more happiness or enjoyment and less unhappiness or suffering.

The world is still what it was/is/will be. Buddha and other saints and sages didn't wish or change the world to be something different than what it was/is/will be. They didn't 'change' or 'take away' the ignorance and suffering in the worldly beings through generating 'intention' or 'wish' or 'resolution' or 'positive thinking' or 'super mind power' to make all beings in the world be free from ignorance and suffering. If they could, they would already have 'made' the entire world free from all ignorance and the consequences of ignorance. There won't be any ignorance or suffering in any beings or in the world. They could only work on self-realization, and upon the attainment of liberation, out of compassion, selflessly, they shared their path or knowledge and experience with some others who also wished to attain liberation from ignorance and suffering, to work on their own salvation via self-effort, self-purification, self-discipline, self-inquiry and self-realization.

They didn't or couldn't 'change' or 'interfere with' or 'influence' those who weren't interested in attaining liberation from ignorance and the consequences of ignorance but only wanted to create a 'better world with higher quality of life and more pleasurable enjoyment that they desired', to also be interested in attaining liberation from ignorance and the consequences of ignorance. They didn't 'get angry with' or 'disappointed with' or 'frustrated with' or 'condemn' or 'punish' those who were ignorant and selfish, who weren't interested in purity, purification of the mind, dispassion, desireless, self-discipline, self-control, self-inquiry, self-realization and silence of the mind.

There's no 'heroism' to try to 'save' the world from 'inhumanity, evilness and destruction', but compassionate actions are being performed selflessly, without expectation to 'change' the world to be in certain way that is likable, desirable and agreeable for the mind.

There's no frustration or dissatisfaction or disappointment or anger or unhappiness or sorrow when one doesn't get the cooperation or support or appreciation from others for something that one thinks and believes as good and right.

There's no pushing away or denial towards something that the worldly minded would perceive as 'negative', as this mind perceives everything as it is, neither positive nor negative.

It's everyone's freedom for what they want to think and believe, and what they want to do with their life, body and mind.

This teaching is a contemplation for those who want to practice yoga.

Yoga and worldly 'positive empowerment' ideologies?

Many people, including yoga practitioners and yoga teachers, would think and believe that yoga philosophy or the teachings of yoga and the yoga practice is about 'positive empowerment'.

There's nothing wrong or bad with 'positive empowerment' ideologies, it helps many people to 'positively' deal with the perception of certain worldly life experiences that are not necessarily the way that the mind would like it to be, that are quite challenging, exhausting, unpleasant, painful or harsh, by being 'positive', 'optimistic', 'hopeful', 'confident', 'worthy', 'strong', and etc, just that it is not what yoga and yoga practice is about.

Worldly passionate egoistic minds that are identifying with and attached onto the qualities of names and forms of family and cultural background, worldly thinking and belief, intelligence, knowledge, creativity, higher technologies, higher standard of living, enjoyment of the senses, sense of achievement and meaningfulness, sense of belonging, social community interaction and activities, relationships, friendships, fun elements, good condition of the body and the living environment, and etc, wouldn't like or agree with the practice of yoga of renouncing worldly ideas/thinking/belief/habits and thinning-out/annihilation of the mind.

Only those who have realized the fleeting impermanence of all the names and forms in this worldly life existence, who have intense yearning for salvation or liberation from suffering, would perceive and understand worldly life existence differently from the passionate minds.

For the passionate minds, the worldly life existence is what they are and all they are, and they spend all the effort, energy, life span and sense of meaningfulness into creating, empowering and protecting what they think is 'I' and 'mine' - my life, my body, my mind, my name, my gender, my sexual orientation, my appearance, my action, my fruit of action, my health, my feelings, my education, my career, my wealth, my achievements, my results, my qualifications, my certifications, my accumulated experiences, my property, my things, my knowledge, my language, my personality, my professionalism, my talent, my skill, my ability, my strength, my love, my kindness, my goodness, my family, my ancestor, my birth place, my nationality, my race, my community, my tribe, my people, my country, my world, my planet earth, my universe, my culture, my religion, my thinking, my belief, my rights, my freedom, my happiness, my relationships, my friends, my relatives, my partner, my children, my grandchildren, my pets, my future, my children's future, my interest, my hobbies, my collections, my ideas, my creativity, my ambitions, my generosity, my reputation, my confidence, my self-esteem, my pride, my contribution, my sacrifice, my effort, my time, my space, my yoga, my yoga mat, my yoga accessories, my yoga brand, my favorite yoga practice/yoga poses, my yoga school, my yoga students, my yoga teacher, my Guru, my disciples, my followers, my fans, my God, my things to do/enjoy before dying, and so on.

For the dispassionate minds, the worldly life existence is simply a precious momentary platform and priceless opportunity for them to work diligently to annihilate the modification of the mind/ignorance/egoism - the root of countless births and deaths (restlessness deriving from the ceaseless thought activities arising and passing away that generate the countless interchanging states of mind), and the consequence of that - suffering. The worldly passionate minds would ignorantly think that this is selfishness, that this doesn't contribute anything to the world like all the other intelligent educated kind people who actively trying to do so many actions in order to change the world to be a better place or to be the way that they think it should be, but they don't realize this serious stuff of yoga practice is indeed the greatest form of contribution towards humanity that anyone can give - to be free from ignorance/egoism/impurities and suffering, to be in peace and manifesting peace into the environment/the society/the world, unconditionally.

If someone really interested in practicing yoga or realizing yoga, must understand the difference between yoga (the annihilation of the ego/egoism and restraining/thinning-out the function/modification of the mind) and worldly 'positive empowerment' ideologies (the empowerment of the ego/egoism and stimulating/augmenting the function/modification of the mind).

The one who needs to be empowered and is being empowered by 'positive empowerment' ideologies is the ego. All these worldly 'positive empowerment' ideologies are stimulating/feeding/fueling/empowering/strengthening the thinking mind/egoism. While yoga practice is mainly to breakdown/annihilate the ego/egoism and stop stimulating/stop feeding/thinning out/annihilating the thinking mind (including the mind with all positive and good qualities.)

The one who truly understands yoga and practices yoga, doesn't need to be empowered, encouraged, motivated, inspired, acknowledged, supported or accompanied by anything and anyone, but realizing the truth and lives in the truth, and not running away from or denying the undesirable/disagreeable reality perceived by the mind that it doesn't like and doesn't want, or trying to change the undesirable/disagreeable reality to be the way that the mind would like or want it to be.

Yoga practitioners or yoga teachers, who think and believe all beings/people, including themselves, need to be empowered, encouraged, motivated, inspired, acknowledged, supported, or accompanied by other(s), of family/community/teachers/friend circle/social network to live life, to look after themselves and/or others under their care, to be doing something beneficial to themselves and/or others, to be performing their duties and responsibilities towards themselves and/or others, and to perform the yoga and meditation practice to attain salvation, otherwise, they would be discouraged, demotivated or lack of inspiration to perform all these actions, then they aren't really practicing yoga, even though they might think and believe that they have been practicing yoga for a long time or they are highly experienced in the yoga practice. Though it's everyone's freedom of how they understand and practice yoga.

This doesn't mean that the world is a loveless place if all practice yoga or everyone doesn't (need to) connect with other(s), to be giving or receiving love from one another, but in fact, it's the contrary, the world will be full of 'love', as everyone is love itself and manifesting love unlimitedly, unconditionally, intentionlessly or selflessly. There's needless to connect with other(s) or depend on receiving love from other(s) to feel love or be loved by other(s). There's no separateness, loneliness or meaninglessness.

It's only those who haven't realized the truth of 'love', will perceive separateness, loneliness and meaninglessness, and believe that all beings need to be giving and receiving love from one another, and have the need to connect with other(s), to be receiving love from other(s), to feel love and meaningfulness. That is not freedom, nor end of suffering. As there will always be many inhumanity, selfishness, cruelty, greed, violence or corruption in the world as most minds are not free from ignorance and egoism, and are functioning under the impulse for survival and gratification of desires. Even those who identifying themselves as 'good' beings/people who think they do many 'good' actions in this world would also want to discriminate/punish/hurt other(s) out of pride, self-righteousness, self-protection, survival instinct, anger, hatred, hurt, fear, worry, and etc.

Love or peace is always there, as it is, never increase nor decrease, unaffected by the impermanent changes of good and bad qualities of names and forms. Those who realized this, are free from clinging onto, or needing, or craving for love from someone or somewhere. It's only those under the influence of ignorance and egoism don't realize this, and hence are not free, but finding momentary satisfaction and comforts in the qualities of names and forms that the mind likes and desires.

Dispassion, renouncing worldly ideas, objects, activities, ties and relationships, non-attachment, non-identification, awareness, self-control, self-discipline, the correct understanding of the basic and yet essential teachings of yoga, and the four essential qualities of a Sadhaka - Viveka, Vairagya, Shatsampat and Mumukshutva, are the very basic qualities of a yoga practitioner or person who wants to practice yoga and realize yoga.

The real 'Guru' or teacher is there to guide the students/practitioners to destroy/eliminate the ego/egoism and to thin-out the mind. Destroying/eliminating the ego/egoism and thinning-out the mind is the only objective/goal of all the yoga practice and it's true compassion and the greatest contribution to humanity and the world. All other benefits deriving from performing the yoga practice are just some momentary side-effects. These side-effects cannot bring salvation or liberation. Yoga practitioners aren't interested in all these momentary side-effects at all, but allowing them to be there as they are.

Everyone is free to practice yoga, or not. It's everyone's freedom for what they want to do with their life, their body and mind.

Be free.

The difference between non-attachment and positive thinking

It's good and helpful to develop positive thinking especially when the mind is being influenced by negative thinking that generates unnecessary tension, fear, worry or unhappiness in the mind and further projecting all these impurities through speech and action into the environment in the relationships with others in everyday life.

Positive thinking is part of the many yoga practice, but it's not the goal or the end of yoga practice, as the mind is still not free from attachment and identification towards names and forms that the mind perceives as positive and negative, and there is craving and clinging towards what the mind perceives as positive, and there's aversion towards what the mind perceives as negative. The mind is not free from desire, duality and separateness. There's desire of craving or longing for positiveness or goodness and there's clinging onto positiveness or goodness with intention or expectation to control the reality to be the way that the mind thinks it should be and likes it to be.

There's nothing wrong with "Think positively and optimistically, and everything will be good in your life and you can achieve anything that you want." especially for the minds that are easily be disturbed or determined by names and forms that the worldly thinking and belief categorized as bad, negative, unhappiness and wrong. Just that the mind is not free from desires, even though the mind would feel happy and satisfied when the desires are being gratified, and its impermanent. Then pride might arise in this mind, "I am superhuman. I have superpower. I can control everything to be the way that I like it to be." This mind is not free. And it's okay, if that is what the mind wants. It's everyone's freedom for how the mind thinks and what it wants.

The mind that is free, is undetermined by the gratification of the desires of likes and dislikes, wants and don't wants, to be happy, confident, meaningful or peaceful. It is peaceful as it is, undetermined by the world or the worldly thinking and belief, ideas and values, achievements, good and bad condition and situation.

Non-attachment is nothing to do with positive thinking. The mind that knows non-attachment doesn't need to think positively. The thinking is just what it is. It is neither positive nor negative.

It's about unattached towards what the intellect recognizes and categorizes as positive or negative, good or bad, happiness and unhappiness, right and wrong. Undisturbed or undetermined by all the perceptions of name and form that are pleasant or unpleasant. Without attachment or identification towards the different states of the mind or the mind activities. Without intention or expectation towards the perceived reality to control the reality to be the way that the mind likes it to be. Allowing the reality to be what it is, and allowing the reality to change as it is.

The mind is free from being determined by coming in contact with positiveness and goodness and not coming in contact with negativeness and badness, to be content or peaceful. The mind is content and peaceful as it is, regardless of success or failure, achievement or non-achievement, good or bad experiences and condition.

The mind is free from desire, duality and separateness. Knowing that the quality of positiveness and negativeness are both impermanent. But, beyond positiveness and negativeness, is unconditional peace, that is undetermined by the qualities of name and form that the mind perceives through the senses, whether it's positive or negative elements, good or bad condition and situation, and desirable/pleasant or undesirable/unpleasant life experiences.

If the perceived reality is nice and pleasant, let it be. It will change, and allow it to change, without intention or expectation to control the reality not to be bad and negative.

If the perceived reality is not nice and unpleasant, let it be. It will change, and allow it to change, without intention or expectation to control the reality to be all good and positive.

There are actions being performed out of compassion in everyday life, but there's no attachment, identification, desires, intention or expectation towards the action and the fruit of action. There are beneficial actions being performed but there's no intention or expectation that the fruit of actions will be all good and positive, or nothing bad and negative. Allowing the fruit of action to be what it is.

There's no identification with all the impermanent changes of names and forms to be existing as 'I'.

Life might be good and easy, enjoy and appreciate without attachment. It's impermanent, and it doesn't matter.

Life might be not so good and full of difficulties, but it's okay. It's impermanent, and it doesn't matter.

Be free.

Observe all the names and forms as they are

The worldly restless impure egoistic minds keep looking for stimulation of inputs and outputs.

It doesn't like to observe names and forms as they are.

It projects quality and duality onto all the perceived names and forms based on its likes and dislikes influencing by its thinking and belief.

Through remembering what it perceived or what it knows, it judges, compares and expects.

It clings, craves, rejects, agrees, disagrees, wants, doesn't want, creates and destroys.

It has many forms of desires and great ambitions.

There's aspiration and intention to perform actions and inactions motivated by its desires and ambitions.

It has 'passionate' aspiration and intention to 'share' what it knows and has, and 'share' what others know and have.

There's nothing wrong with that, just that the mind is not free.

Even the mind that projects 'good' and 'kind' quality onto itself, desires to be 'good and kind' and thinking 'positively and optimistically', and performing good and kind actions to benefit the world, is not necessarily be free from selfishness. The one who thinks "I am not selfish. I want to be unselfish." and recognizing other people are being selfish, is not necessarily be free from selfishness.

"I want the world to be good and I want to make the world good, so that I and my loved ones can have a good world to live in and have a good life."

It's everyone's freedom for what they want to think and believe, and what they want to do with their life existence.

Silent the restless mind, abandon 'positive thinking' and 'optimism', be free from desires, and even the desire to be free from suffering, if one truly wishes to realize yoga.

Positive thinking and optimism is just an counteract for 'negative thinking' and 'hopelessness'. It's not the truth nor the end of suffering.

If 'God' exists, 'God' doesn't have intention to make anyone or anything to be good or bad, positive or negative, happy or unhappy.

There's neither positive nor negative, neither good nor bad, neither happiness nor unhappiness, neither elation nor depression.

Dharma doesn't need to be shared, if one knows Dharma.

Peace and love doesn't need to be shared, if one knows peace and love.

Be free from aspiration and intention, if one truly wants to realize yoga.

Don't be ambitious.

'Sharing', 'connecting', 'giving' and 'receiving' are reflections of separateness.

'Sharing', 'connecting', 'giving' and 'receiving' don't exist in oneness.

Who is sharing with whom? Who is connecting with whom? Who is giving? Who is receiving?

Be free.

Yoga retreat is not about running away from the reality that we don't like and don't want

Not running away from or denying, but confronting the reality that is not the way that we would like it to be, and being aware of this life existence, the world, the society and the surrounding environment is not necessarily 'all good' or perfectly the way that we would like it to be, or the way that we think it should be, with wisdom and compassion, without aversion or fear towards the reality that we think is 'not all good', or 'imperfect', or 'challenging', is our yoga practice.

Living in the world as we are, being aware of all kinds of uncertainty, insecurity, unrest, cautiousness, defects, or imperfection in all aspects, and knowing how to remain equanimous and be at peace, without fear and worry, without being over-powered or determined by the reality that is not necessarily the way that we would like it to be, is what yoga practice is about.

This isn't about trying to be 'strong'. 'Strength' has a limit, and is conditional. But wisdom and compassion is unconditional and unlimited. Those who know the law of nature, of cause and effect, impermanence and selflessness, they don't need to be strong or be positive.

Joining a yoga retreat is not about running away from the reality that we don't like and don't want, to be in a 'safe and peaceful place' without 'bad people' or 'things that we don't like and don't want', and be surrounded by 'good people' who are like-minded and doing things that make us feel good and happy and meaningful.

People might think that yoga practice or yoga retreat should be conducted in a 'special place' or 'out of the world place', free from any 'bad energy' or 'bad elements', thinking that 'yoga retreat' means moving away from the imperfect world, or running away from everyday life's duties, responsibilities and cares, to have a few days or few weeks of 'intentionally induced perfect form of reality' of 'peacefulness' or 'calmness' or 'problemlessness'. No doubt that being in a desirable 'conditional reality' will give momentary relief or peace, but this doesn't help us to be free from 'fear', 'disturb', 'restlessness', and 'suffering' when we go back to our everyday life living among the society or in the world that is not necessarily the way that we would like it to be, that is not in our control to be the way that we would like it to be.

A real yoga retreat allows us to learn how to live in the world as it is, performing all our actions, duties, and responsibilities without attachment, identification, or expectation, without fear and worry. It's learning about the mind and all its modification, about suffering and the cause of suffering, about how to transcend all kinds of 'suffering', 'restlessness', 'impurities', or 'fear', and how to confront the reality of life existence in this present moment that is not necessarily the way that we would like it to be, or the way that we think it should be, without fear and worry, and have peace wherever we are, unconditionally, being undetermined by all the impermanent changes in the qualities of names and forms.

Yoga, or unconditional peace, being free from ignorance and egoism, is not limited to a particular 'place', or 'space', or 'activity', or 'condition', or 'quality', or 'name and form'.

Being positive and optimistic, denying or ignoring all kinds of 'ignorant and unpleasant behavior and happenings' in the world, in the society, or in the surrounding environment, and persistently thinking and believing that everyone are good, there's no bad people; everything is good, there's nothing bad; life is all good, there's nothing bad; the world is all good, there's nothing bad, and etc, doesn't change the reality that we don't like or don't want to be the way that we would like it to be.

It's like sweeping and hiding all the dust and rubbish under the cupboards and sofas, so that they are not in sight, it doesn't mean that the room is all cleaned. And no matter how many times we sweep the floor, and throw out all the dust and rubbish out of the room, there will always be dust and rubbish accumulating here and there from time to time, unless everyone who enter the room stop bringing in dust and rubbish into the room. This is the same as looking after the mind. We do our best to 'clean up' the mind regularly and persistently, but impurities will still exist from time to time, until the root cause of impurities (ignorance and egoism) is uprooted completely.

When there's no problem, there's no need to anticipate a problem. When there's a problem, confront it, without fear and worry.

Be free.

Positive thinking is not the goal of yoga practice or the end of suffering

We don't teach positive thinking in our yoga classes and retreats, although for those who are under the influence of 'negative thinking', whom are being very negative towards everything that they perceive, we would encourage them to develop 'positive thinking' to counter the 'negative thinking'. But that is not the goal of yoga practice.

In the beginning of yoga practice, when the mind is still influenced or over-powered by what the mind believes or recognizes as negative names and forms, we need to develop positive thinking to counter any negative thinking, but that is not what yoga is about - liberation from ignorance or the end of suffering.

When people try to be positive, think positive and stay positive, it's because these minds are not free from ignorance and are being ignorant of the truth of names and forms. The mind perceives or recognizes quality of 'negative' in the objects of names and forms projected from the mind based on what the mind believes as something 'negative'. The perception of negativity is still existing in the mind, but the mind tries to push away or deny the perception of names and forms that it believes as 'negative', and tries to convince itself that everything is 'positive' and good. It's denying and running away from the reality that it perceives and believes as 'negative' that it doesn't like and doesn't want.

The mind is not free constantly trying to 'turn' everything that it recognizes as 'negative' into something that the mind believes as 'positive'. But as long as the mind still thinks and believes that there's quality of 'negative' and 'positive', and it doesn't want something 'negative', but it wants everything 'positive', the mind will be forever restless as it tries to maintain 'positive'.

Everything is just what it is, it is neither positive nor negative. But the mind projects the qualities of 'positive' and 'negative' onto everything that it perceives based on what the mind thinks and believes as 'positive' and 'negative'.

Trying to stay positive is not freedom at all. The mind is not free, constantly being in a state of craving towards quality of 'positive' and aversion towards quality of 'negative'.

In the end, we will see that be positive, think positive and stay positive is not the end of suffering.

Yoga is going beyond what the mind believes and recognizes as 'positive' and 'negative'. It is awareness being aware of the perception of names and forms without projecting qualities of 'positive' or 'negative' onto all the objects of names and forms, and allows everything to be what it is - neither positive nor negative.

The realization of non-duality, or attributelessness, or non-separateness, or oneness is real freedom that allows the mind to be in peace, being free from restlessness.

There's no need to generate clinging or craving towards what the mind used to believe as 'positive', and there's no need to generate aversion towards what the mind used to believe as 'negative'. The mind will be free from restlessness coming from aversion towards quality of 'negative', or fear of being negative, and be free from clinging or craving towards quality of 'positive'.

There's no need to think and stay positive to counter negativity as 'negative' and 'positive' doesn't exist in the objects of names and forms. They only exist in the mind when the mind is under the influence of ignorance. There's no need to turn 'negative' into 'positive', when the mind is free.

Be anything that we want to be?

"Be anything that we want to be"

We hear this very often from yoga classes, or positive thinking and motivational classes to encourage people to be positive and confident about themselves, and strive to become who they want to be.

There's nothing wrong with "Be anything that we want to be" as long as we know that "Whatever we want to be, is not who we are"

There's no attachment or identification towards what we think we were, or what we are, or what we want to be.

All the names and forms that we think we are, or we could be, or we want to be, are impermanent and there's no 'I' exists in these names and forms.

Neither positive nor negative, everything is just what it is...

The teaching of yoga and Buddhism is about seeing the truth of things as they are, and allow all the names and forms to be what they are, without generate clinging or craving towards what the mind wants to think and believe as positive, good and happiness, without generate aversion towards what the mind wants to think and believe as negative, bad and unhappiness.

Everything is just what it is. It is neither positive nor negative, neither good nor bad, neither happiness nor unhappiness.

The truth is still the truth, whether we know about it, or not; whether we like it, or not; whether we agree with it, or not. Everything is subject to impermanence. This life existence comprising the body and mind is subject to changes, discomfort, old age, sickness, weakness and death, or decomposition. The truth doesn't change according to whether our mind is being positive or negative, good or bad, happy or unhappy.

Being super positive, super good and super happy, while denying something that the mind recognizes as negative, bad and unhappiness, won't bring the dead back to life, nor prevent the body and mind from experiencing pain or unpleasantness, or else there won't be painful sorrow exists in the world due to losing someone whom we love very much. It won't make other beings to be free from negativity, anger and hatred, or stop being bad and unhappy.

The positive and optimistic people need to be positive and optimistic shows that they do perceive and recognize something as negative, bad and unhappiness, but they want to convince that everything that they are going to experience will be all positive, good and happy, and they don't want to experience something that they perceive and recognize as negative, bad and unhappiness. They are not free from the perception of duality, craving and aversion. Or else, they don't need to be positive and optimistic at all, if truly there is no negative, bad and unhappiness existing in their mind perception.

Impermanent changes are always there. 'Good' things are changing. 'Bad' things are changing. They change due to their respective cause and at their own pace. If somebody who claims to be having the 'super mind power' to influence and change something to be all good and nothing bad, then the world is already all good and nothing bad.

There are many 'good' people everywhere in the world always wishing or praying for the best and goodness in oneself and in others. It's very good, but it doesn't stop 'bad', 'miserable' and 'undesirable' things and happenings continue to be existing here and there. It doesn't make all kinds of suffering and painful sorrow to disappear from everyone's life. It doesn't remove ignorance and egoism in all beings. Or else, every beings in the world will be selfless, peaceful, wise and compassionate.

Practicing yoga or Buddhism is not about to be positive and optimistic, but to see the truth of things as they are (whether it is something pleasant or unpleasant, whether we like or dislike, agree or disagree with it), without attachment, craving or aversion, without identification with the impermanent body and mind to be who we are, without being affected or determined by all the impermanent qualities of name and form to be peaceful, happy, confident and to feel meaningful, or not.

Before we see the truth of things as they are, we need to stay positive and to counter negative thinking with positive thinking, so that we won't be 'drowned' by negative thinking. When we see the truth of things as they are, there is no need to be positive or to have positive thinking.

Be free from ignorance, egoism and all the modifications of the egoism is the ultimate freedom. It's not about denying or keep away from something that the mind perceives and recognizes as negative, bad and unhappiness, or changing something that we don't want into what we would like it to be.

Om shanti.

Not Good At Anything?

It doesn’t matter if it is something “good” or “not good”, we all are good at something…

Everyone must be good at at least one thing…

Good at talking, good at not talking, good at sleeping, good at awaking, good at eating, smiling, laughing, remembering the good things, forgetting the bad things, playing, giving… Even can be good at complaining, gossiping, mocking, lying, or good at being negative about everything…

Some people are good at many things…

Some are good at a few things…

Some are good at one thing…

Some are good at doing nothing, while some are good at doing many things at one time...

Some think that they are not good at anything at all…

But it is still good at “I am not good at anything”, and so, be happy…

There is nothing wrong about being “not good at anything”…

Who says that we have to be good at something? (maybe our ego)…

One thing for sure…

No one is good at everything. There will be something that we are not so good at…

But more important it is not whether we are good at anything or not…

It is about doing everything without judgment, comparison and expectation towards ourselves and others…

Be comfortable with ourselves and enjoy what we are doing whether we are good at it or not…

Because it is really not necessary that we have to be good at what we like to do…

Everyone can sing happily loudly or softly or soundlessly even though we might be out of tune and rhythm or cannot pronounce the lyrics precisely or just mumbling or humming…

But sing and dance responsibly so that we are not disturbing other people’s peace of mind during middle of the night when people need to rest or sleep…

We don’t have to be a well-trained good dancer to dance when we feel like dancing…

Anyone can dance with the feet, with the body, with the hands, with the fingers, with the head or in the heart…

It doesn’t need to comply to any guidelines at all about how to dance…

It doesn’t matter if some people say that we are not “good” at dancing or say that we have no talent and we cannot dance…

It doesn’t matter if people want to get unhappy because they don’t like the way that we sing or dance… It is everyone’s freedom to be unhappy about anything as long as they want, as much as they want…

We can’t please everyone and we can’t stop other people from being unhappy just because they don’t like to hear or see other people sing or dance not according to the way that they want it to be…

But never let our own self judge ourselves or determine that we cannot do this or cannot do that, or we are not good at this or not good at that…

We are not free being bound by all the guidelines or standards that we create for ourselves or create by some other people…

Throw away all these meaningless “guidelines” and “standards”…

We can sing, we can dance, if we like to…

Unless we don’t like to sing nor like to dance, then don’t sing and don’t dance, be happy…

No one can force us to sing and dance if we don’t want to…

Like walking…

We can walk whatever the way that we like to walk…

Back way, side way, upside down, feet turn in, feet turn out, slowly, quickly, not slow not quickly, or John Travolta’s way…

There is no such thing about specific measurement of how far is the foot should be away from each other, nor how fast or how slow that we should walk…

Just walk…

We might trip and fall down from not being “walking properly”, and so? I don’t mind. Since I don’t mind, why do I mind about others mind or not? I fell on my own, I don’t blame anyone nor did I cause anybody to fall due to my improper way of walking…

If some others don’t like the way we walk, let them be…

I am free to walk the way that I want to walk…

Even if I have no feet, I still can walk with my hands…

Even if I have no feet and no hands, I can still manage to “walk” with just my body with some helps or without any helps… I can “roll” my body to where I want to be, or use a machine to help me to move around…

Even if I have only one square foot of space for me to move around, it still can’t stop me from “walking” within that space…

Even if my physical body doesn’t permit me to move at all, I still can “walk” to many places with my mind…

I still “walk” but not necessary comply to the definition of how other people perceive as “walking”…

Let's put it in simple term...

Some people are good at walking slowly, some are good at walking quickly. No matters what is the speed that we are walking, we all are still good at walking...

Who says that I am "not good" at yoga if I cannot touch my toes or cannot balance on one foot?

Who says that I am "good" at yoga if I can stand on my head or my feet can touch my head from behind?

It is not about our ability in doing the things…

It is not about whether we are skillfully good at doing the things…

It is about we accept ourselves as we are, and this is what we are…

This is what my body can do and cannot do...

This is what I am good at and not so good at, and so?

I am not perfect, no one is perfect, and no body can be perfect, but we can be happy even though we are not perfect…

I don’t have to do things or live my life according to the expectations from anybody…

Anyway, everyone came alone when we were born into this world, and will leave alone when our body meets death…

Who will mind after many years we had left the world about who we were and what we did?

When our body is old, sick, and in pain, who can substitute us or take away our old age, illness and pain? No body. Not our loved ones. Not any doctors. Not any medicines. Not Buddha. Not God…

Jesus and Buddha and some other saints and sages in the past were being criticized during their existence and even after their existence…

But that won’t change or affect who they were or what they did or what they had achieved…

Many people still benefit from their teachings whether a little or a lot…

Most important is to be happy in whatever we do…

And do it without any judgments or comparisons or expectations…

And do things that are wholesome and not harmful to ourselves and other beings…

Be happy…

About Positive Thinking

Thoughts are very powerful. Everything manifests from our thoughts. If we have negative thoughts most of the time, we will be projecting negative energy or elements around us and in our lives. Like wise if we have positive thoughts all the time, we will be projecting positive energy or elements into our lives.

In a yoga class, there are different people with different states of mind. Some are more positive and less negative and some are less positive and more negative. There is nothing wrong about being negative. It is a very normal thinking or feeling that everyone has. And regardless of whether positive or negative thinking, they are impermanent.

But if the mind starts to think that "I am not good at doing anything; that I am going to injure myself if I do this movement or exercise; or I am going to be sick if I don’t eat enough of a particular food; or I am going to be weak if I don’t eat particular type of food," and then for sure this will be what’s going to happen onto the body.

In the yoga classes, it is very important that whether the teachers themselves are being positive or negative.

The different types of yoga practice is about balancing, purifying, controlling and directing the energy fields in the body, and influencing the state of the mind. Attentiveness and willpower as well as the different physical positions and movements is the force that can influence and direct the energy fields in our body. When we concentrate at a particular point in our body, we are actually directing or gathering the energy fields towards that area. Yoga practice is not just doing some physical exercises where an instructor is standing in front of a group of people, instructing them to do some physical exercises. There is also some intentionless energy influence is going on between the teacher and the students. It is not something to be seen with our fleshy eyes or to be discussed about. It is intentionless, nameless and formless. It happens naturally when the yoga teacher is sincerely and selflessly to share the knowledge of yoga with other people without the idea of “I am a teacher, and I am giving my energy to the students”. In fact, if there is no egoistic identification with the body, the mind and the ego, we are only being an instrument or channel for other people to come in contact with the knowledge of yoga, to practice yoga, and to attain the realization of yoga. It is not 'I' that is teaching/passing the knowledge of yoga to the students, or that is influencing the energy fields of the students. This energy that allows all and everything to be existing, changing, and ceased existing, is selfless and doesn't belong to anyone or anything. It's not coming from 'I' transferring the positive or negative energy to the others, or influencing the energy fields of the others, to be positive or negative.

The energy fields, as well as all kinds of names and forms, are neither positive nor negative. It is the thinking or thought process that is functioning under the influence of ignorance and its by-products of different ways of egoistic thinking, understanding, beliefs, values and practices, that is projecting the quality of positive or negative onto all and everything.

If there is still the presence of the idea of 'I' in the mind identifying with the body and the mind and the actions of teaching yoga as "I am a yoga teacher who teach yoga to the yoga students," then we will think and believe that we are the one who is transferring our own energy to the students or we are influencing the energy fields of the yoga students when we teach the yoga classes, regardless of whether we are aware of it, or not, even though when we have no intention to do so. That’s why some yoga teachers get very tired physically and mentally, or feeling exhausted and has low energy level after giving yoga classes. And hence, they need to perform their own personal practice to replenish the lost energy. But this doesn't happen to a yoga teacher that has no identification with the body and mind, and the actions of teaching.

There are some forms of energy exchange/influence among one another all the time without knowing about it. Every moment we might be influenced by the different types of energy fields of all and everyone and everything in the world, without us being aware of it.

Only those who has no identification with the body and the mind will not be influenced, or affected, or disturbed by all these energy fields. People who have very strong willpower will be less affected or influenced by the external energy fields, or what is happening in the surrounding environment. While people with very weak willpower will be affected or influenced very much by the external energy fields or the surrounding environment. One who mixed with others who are negative would become negative over a period of time, and vice versa. While some minds that have transcended the duality of positive and negative will not become negative even if they are surrounded by all and everyone who are negative.

By knowing this, we will understand that when two people live together for some time, they will start to look alike with each other and they will be having the similar personality, thinking, gestures and mood as well. Without any intention, people with positive thinking can uplift some other people who are negative and depressed. While people with negative thinking might pull down some other people if these people are low in energy and have weak willpower, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Group energy can have a very strong influential power towards those who are very sensitive towards external energy fields, that are easily be influenced or affected by the surrounding environment. When we walk into a room that is full of people who are very anxious and furious, immediately we will be feeling anxious and agitated as well. When we are being with a group of people who are very cheerful and happy, immediately we will be feeling good and happy as well. Like wise if we are being with a group of people who are very depressed and negative, we will be feeling depressed and become very negative as well.

The leader of a group has the huge influence power to affect all the other people in the group. People are paying attention to this leader and admiring this leader. And thus, the people’s thinking and desire would be influenced by the leader, and the people will agree with and become like minded with the leader.

That's why, the state of mind (the energy field) of the yoga teacher is a very important factor that might be influencing the students to become more positive, cheerful, peaceful and wise, or not. Because most people will easily be influenced, or affected, or disturbed by others’ energy fields especially from a leader, or a teacher. Most of the school children who are in the same class under a same teacher will be having the similar type of mentality, way of thinking, belief, values, desires, and behaviors. Everyone is being molded into certain types of personality, way of thinking, and behavior without us being aware of it. We all think that we have our very own personal type of mentality, way of thinking, and behavior pattern, but actually we are being conditioned and influenced by some other people constantly.

If people had been watching John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever, and within the next few weeks, we would see some people on the street were walking in the same way and had the similar expressions as John Travolta’s character in that movie.

When a person is being with a group of friends who like to gamble, or smoke, or drink, and very naturally this person will be doing the same activities as well, unless he or she has a very strong willpower. Look around us, this is what happening in the world.

The yoga teacher has got the ability or power to influence the students to become more positive or negative, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

If the yoga teacher has fear and negativity about getting injuries in doing certain exercises or asana poses, then most of the students will be having the same fear and negativity as well, and will easily get hurt or injuries from doing the exercises and asana poses, because they are thinking and believing in such way.

If the yoga teacher is very positive and has no fear and worries at all towards performing all the exercises and asana poses, then most of the students will be full of courage and confidence while performing all the exercises and asana poses without any fear and worries of getting any injuries. And thus the practice will be injury free, or has lower risk of injury.

It is because when people easily get muscle soreness or injuries from doing any exercises or asana poses is due to the tensions in the muscles caused by mental tension of fear and worries while performing the exercises or asana poses. The mind is limiting the ability of the physical body to perform the exercises or asana poses. When there is fear and worries, the mind tensed up that leads to the entire physical body also tensed up. When the muscles are tensed, unnecessary muscles fiber tear, or muscles pull or cramps could happen easily.

Especially when we perform the headstand, if a person's mind is relaxed while performing the pose and has no fear or worries about getting injured from falling down, his or her body and muscles will be relaxed even though if he or she does fall down from the headstand, but it will not generate any unnecessary injuries at all. Like wise, if the person is full of fear and worries that he or she might get hurt from falling down, then all his or her body muscles will be tensed up especially in the neck, the shoulders, and the back area while performing the headstand. And if he or she does fall down from the headstand, all the muscles in the neck, the shoulders, and the back area are so tensed that unnecessary injury could occur when he or she falls to the ground.

Look at the children who have no fear and worries. They can fall down as many times as they like whether intentionally or unintentionally while playing or exercising, and not getting any serious injuries except for a few bruises or cuts. Unless the falling impact is very strong, and the bones density is not so healthy, then there might be possibility of getting broken bones or bone fractures. Such people should avoid any kinds of fall or high impact movements and activities. We need to have an open mind while trying to perform all kinds of activities without the negative thinking of getting injuries, while we need to know what is the limitation of our physical body and not injuring ourselves blindly. But certainly not to stop ourselves from trying any activities due to fear and worries, or afraid of doing certain exercises or asana poses because we think and believe that there will be injury if we try to do them.

Although being cautious and attentive while performing any kinds of activities that might can avoid certain unnecessary injuries is something good, and will keep ourselves from getting injuries carelessly. But do not let the fear and worries conquering or over-powering our mind. This will stop us from doing many things that we could actually do. We always underestimate the ability of our body and the mind. That’s why yoga practice is dealing with the mind first before we move on into the physical yoga practice. If we are full of negative thinking or thoughts, the entire path will become negative and challenging as well.

This is the mind. Our mind limits us from doing many things, it's not the limitation of the physical body. The physical body is strong and flexible enough to perform many activities but the mind is limiting the body to do so due to fear and worries – lack of confidence, of not knowing what is the ability and limitation of the body and mind in the present moment now.

If ten years ago my body was suffering from certain injuries but that doesn’t determine that now I cannot perform the activities that I couldn’t do when I was having the injuries ten years ago.

Every moment the condition of our body and the mind is different. Be very open minded and free ourselves from negative thinking. Enjoy whatever we are doing without any fear and worries. Things will be much easier and enjoyable when the mind is relaxed and the body is tension free. All the exercises or asana poses that we thought they were difficult and dangerous will become easy and not dangerous anymore if we can let go the negative thinking of “the body might get some injuries from doing this or that” , or “I think I can never do this or that”, or “Most probably I will fall down from this position and hurt my neck, or my back, or my hips.”

It is the same in all our daily activities in life as well. Free ourselves from negative thinking. Be positive and open minded. We will see the entire world from a very different perspective and conception. Our life will be easier and happier. Our relationship with everyone will also have less unnecessary 'problems'.

Positive thinking doesn't mean that "I believe that I won't get hurt from falling down at any height," or "I can do and achieve everything that I desire," as that is pure ignorance. It's about freeing the mind from negative thinking of unnecessary doubt, fear and worry while performing any activities, while knowing and respecting the ability and limitation of the body and mind, without hurting the body and mind by forcing the body and mind beyond its limitation in the present moment.

It's okay if there are some activities or goals that the body and mind cannot do or achieve in this present moment now. Just do what is possible in this present moment now, with full attentiveness, without attachment, identification, or expectation.

Before the realization of the truth of names and forms, the mind is under the influence of duality. If so, the practice of positive thinking exists to counter negative thinking, so that the mind is not being over-whelmed by negative thinking. Upon the realization of the truth of names and forms, where everything is just what it is, that everything are neither good nor bad, neither positive nor negative, then the mind doesn't even need to be positive or think positive to counter any negativity or negative thinking, as there's nothing positive or negative. That is freedom.

About Yoga

Know thyself. Everything is impermanent and selfless. There is no 'I'. There is no 'I am selfless'/'I am not selfless'. There is no 'I am hurt'/'I need to be healed from hurt'. Non-blind believing, non-blind following, non-blind practicing and non-blind propagating, but be open-minded to inquire the truth of everything. Be free. Be peaceful. Be happy.
